Gerard Depardieu plays her husband, Georges, a slightly older man who has just lost his business and has gone to work on the construction of a bridge, which requires him to live in a dormitory during the week. Meanwhile, his wife meets a man (Charles Berling) at a matinee of WEST SIDE STORY with whom she strikes up a torrid affair that proves to be more intense than either could have imagined. However, Georges soon finds out about the affair and struggles to come to terms with the implications of it. Featuring a luminous performance from Ms. Bouquet and sensitive direction from Mr. Depardieu and Frederic Auburtin, THE BRIDGE is a powerful study of the fragility of relationships. [More]

Though it lacks style and gloss, and it's certainly not a major event, it concentrates on telling an emotionally real story and succeeds. Full Review |
