From the opening sequence--a high-speed, high-tech truck robbery--the film never drops below the red line. Roaring along at breakneck speed, Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew meet on the streets of L.A. each night to show off their high-powered racers. When new guy Brian (Paul Walker) wants to add his fuel to the fire, he can't cough up the cash to race, but offers up his car as collateral. In their tiny jacked compacts, Dom, Brian, and Edwin (Ja Rule) burst into a high-gear race with Brian nearly beating perennial champion Dom. But in the final moments, he loses the race and his car. Brian's debt is quickly cleared, however, when he saves Dom both from the cops and from a potentially violent encounter with Johnny Tran (Rick Yune), a rival gang lord. Dom takes Brian under his wing--a decision that disgusts his gang but delights his sister Mia (Jordana Brewster). The gang never suspects that Brian is not who he seems: he is actually an undercover cop, and though he wishes otherwise, he's there to bust Dom for committing the armed truck robbery witnessed in the opening scenes. Reviews for The Fast and the Furious
Since we've become a nation of 9-mile-per-gallon, automatic-transmission SUV-driving sissies, a movie about the blood-curdling speed you can achieve in a Honda Civic is probably all we deserve.
The movie may be intellectually sophomoric, dramatically adolescent and morally vacuous, but it's good fun while it lasts.
There's some undeniable appeal to watching a well-oiled, built-for-speed machine operating with its pedal to the metal.
Even if your life doesn't revolve around your carburetor, the movie is a kicky guilty pleasure.
If you're looking for an escape from the real world... you've come to the right place.
Often crossing the double yellows into hokey terrain, "Furious" can still be a satisfactory cheap ride.
Nothing more than a shiny object designed to entertain the simpleminded.
Sadly, the movie is more than racing, and every other aspect of the film is crap.
About as cool as the fake rock music they used to play in Brady Bunch episodes when Greg and Marcia went to school dances.
...B-movie entertainment that is ideal for the drive-in on a warm summer’s night – if you can find a drive-in...
Leaves all those computer-rendered mummies, aliens and tomb raiders in the dust.
Has accomplished more entertainment-wise than Driven or Gone in 60 Seconds could ever fathom.
Director Rob Cohen ("The Skulls"), whose filmography inspired no hope going into this film, delivers a flashy B flick that's sure to attain a cult audience
Little more than an old B-movie wreck spruced up and sent speeding onto the screen.
