Schroeder is sometimes able to disguise his contempt for the material and elevate it into something serviceable (like Single White Female). In Murder by Numbers, though, even Schroeder can't keep his own boredom from showing.

When the dead body of a woman is found in the woods near the river, feisty homicide detective Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock) and her new partner, Sam Kennedy (Ben Chaplin) are assigned to the case. That's the premise for MURDER BY NUMBERS, a psychological thriller directed by Barbet Schroeder (REVERSAL OF FORTUNE, SINGLE WHITE FEMALE). Determined to solve the crime, Mayweather follows her hunches and microscopic bits of evidence, focusing her investigation on two teens: Justin Pendleton (Michael Pitt), a brilliant, misunderstood nerd, and Richard Haywood (Ryan Gosling), a smooth talking, spoiled rich kid. From the beginning, the audience knows that this unlikely duo has formed a secret bond that pushes the boundaries of morality and the law in their attempt to commit the perfect murder and experience complete freedom. It's up to Mayweather, who buries herself in her work in an attempt to forget her own tormented past, and Kennedy, a transfer from Vice who is working his first homicide case, to ignore the stereotypical profiles and see past the obvious in order to solve the crime. Slowly but surely, the truth comes out as Mayweather works on instinct while battling her own demons and being drawn into the boys' game of cat-and-mouse. [More]

Reviews for Murder by Numbers
Plays like Matlock or Columbo at twice the length and half the energy level.
Murder by Numbers is a perfect title, recalling the 'paint by numbers' faux-art form notable for its lack of originality and inspiration.
Proves more lumbering and obvious than dramatically strong or intellectually riveting...Don't count on it for anything beyond a modest level of competence.
Never achieves any level close to mediocre -- making the film drag on and on.
I wish I could ask for Sandy's gun and badge. She's an unintentional menace to moviegoers.
A TV style murder mystery with a few big screen moments (including one that seems to be made for a different film altogether).
The film loses steam whenever it shifts from the teen killers to the adult pair investigating the crime.
An unpleasant though sometimes effective psychological thriller that is noteworthy for being the film in which actress Sandra Bullock has gotten her act back together.
Sandra Bullock's best dramatic performance to date (is) almost enough to lift (this) thrill-kill cat-and-mouser...above its paint-by-numbers plot.
The script is too mainstream and the psychology too textbook to intrigue.
There are things to like about Murder By Numbers -- but, in the end, the disparate elements don't gel.
A picture by numbers. Director Barbet Schroeder connects each of the story's obvious dots with extra slowness, lest we miss guessing any of the turns.
Forget the misleading title, what's with the unexplained baboon cameo?
The standard-issue melodramatic ending is the only disappointment in this thoughtful psychological thriller.
