My name is CAGE now! Nick, look a lot like the insane, uncanny and oddly talented actor he will become years later in films such as Mandy and The Bees! Even Though He Himself Doesn't Know It Yet when this film is made! Whoa what a plot twist there buddy. You go, Cage. Shout-out to my man Robert McKee for 1) having a good sense of humor about the whole 'make fun of me and my life's work in a Hollywood movie' thing and 2)taking himself and everything oh so seriously every day of his life, which must be exhausting but what a payoff when he helps so many would be terrible writers cut their chops or give up, thankfully, and 3) fixing the writing in this once broken script IRL, turning Adaptation into something not just memorable but remarkable. The real-life backstory is completely outlandish—almost as much as the plot of the film itself. The film seamlessly blends character-driven, thoughtful moments with a metacontextual narrative that wraps back around on itself like the Ouroboros (whatever that means). On paper, there is no reason this film should work. It only succeeds because Spike Jonze, Charlie Kaufman, and Nicolas Cage are all masters of their craft, each committed 110% to this wonderfully wacky endeavor. Nicolas Cage is perfect for this movie. His ability to play two distinct characters and make them feel different, even within the same scene, is impressive. The logistical feat of achieving this with the limited digital editing technology of the time is equally remarkable. Chris Cooper is phenomenal as the drawling, scummy, but oddly charming Laroche. He brings incredible humanity to a character that could have easily been a joke. Despite its self-awareness, the film's final act falls prey to its own excesses. The absurdity approaches a point of numbness, wearing out its welcome and making us question our investment. It does manage to come together with a satisfying, if predictable, ending. Overall, Adaptation is a hoot with plenty to say about writing, self-understanding, and life in general. See more Read all reviews
