If your tastes run to the slightly bizarre and weird - then “Adaptation” is for you.
“Adaptation” is a wildly dark comedy, which dances on the question of where does fact end and fiction begin.
Nicolas Cage as the dumpy and shy screenwriter puts in an extremely convincing performance as Charlie. Then taking it up a notch brings us Donald, Charlie’s twin brother who is also a screenwriter and possesses the confidence and strengths his brother lacks.
Charlie is suffering from an acute case of writer’s block when asked to adapt a novel about orchids into a movie screenplay. Making Charlie more and more frustrated is Donald’s creativity, which seems to flow in an endless river of success.
Discovering that the only way to write about orchids - is to write about writing about orchids, Charlie begins to unwind and discover himself.
Co-star Meryl Streep enhances “Adaptation’s” story as the author of the book Charlie is trying to turn into a movie.
The film is a wonderful whirlwind of is he or isn’t he’s. If your tastes run to the slightly bizarre and weird - then “Adaptation” is for you.
I recommend it highly with 4 stars out of 4. It carries an R rating for language, sexuality, drug use and violent images.
