Set in the early 1900s, this film follows a young man named Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan) on his way home to India after having spent the past ten years in London. It does what the movies were meant to do: move, dance and swirl in the popular imagination.
It's all vastly sumptuous, though the spectacle frequently overwhelms the dramatic impact.
Aishwarya Rai's natural beauty anchors the film's three best musical numbers, which balance out the slower and heavier melodramatic parts. All in all, a classy production.
There's more to Devdas than extravagance; the emotion and passion of the story is felt just as strongly in every frame as the budget.
The entire film has an overwhelming hugeness to it that's hard to resist.
When a movie throws as much at you as Devdas does, it's easy to forgive minor disappointments.
