Charlize Theron gives a very fine performance in Monster. Too bad the movie has no idea what to do with it.

In a revelatory performance, Charlize Theron stars in the shocking and moving true-life story of Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute executed last year in Florida after being convicted of murdering six men. While Wuornos confessed to the six murders, including a policeman, she claimed to have killed only in self-defense, resisting violent assaults while working as a prostitute. Bravely burrowing beneath the tabloid headlines about America’s first female serial killer—and the media’s sordid designation of Wuornos as an unrepentant monster—in the midst of the horrors and pathologies, first-time writer-director Patty Jenkins unearths an unlikely love story between two misfits. Nearing suicidal despair, Wuornos wanders into a Florida bar, where she meets Selby Wall (Christina Ricci), a young woman sent by her parents to live with an aunt in order to “cure her homosexuality.” Wuornos—victim of a tragic, abusive upbringing—quickly falls in love, and clings to Selby like a life preserver. Unable to find a legitimate job but desperate to sustain her relationship with Selby, Wuornos continues working as a prostitute. When one of her johns turns violent, Wuornos shoots the man in self-defense; the first in her tragic string of killings. Shot in many of the actual locations where Wuornos committed her crimes between 1989-90, in its grittiness, verisimilitude, and hard-won empathy for its antihero, Monster is reminiscent of the great, iconoclastic American films of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Co-starring Bruce Dern, Monster succeeds as searing social commentary, road movie, and, most profoundly, as love story. Theron’s ferocious, fully-committed work—astounding physical transformation matched by unerring psychological acuity—is sure to surprise audiences familiar with her work, and in writer-director Jenkins, Monster heralds a major new filmmaking talent. -- © Newmarket Films [More]

Reviews for Monster
A stirring, brutal and sad examination of the bleak cycle of violence and pain.
Theron digs so deep into her doomed character that it's impossible not to feel empathy.
[Jenkins] turns what could have ended up a lurid sensationalist story into a rich portrait of life on the edge of society.
View this movie prepared, but definitely view it – for Theron’s incredible performance and its important – if difficult – subject matter.
I will be about 6 inches from the television screen come Oscar night screaming Charlize's name until she walks up onto that podium.
Theron is clearly the reason to see the film, but even her impassioned performance is strictly by-the-numbers.
The plot familiar, the direction is only mediocre, and the photography is flat, but the acting is top notch.
Like most serial killer stories, Monster isn't easy to watch. Thanks to Theron and the rock-steady work of those around her, it's equally difficult to forget.
This is the sort of material that can go bad easily, and Theron's performance single-handedly saves it from becoming a Lifetime TV movie.
The film is so succesful in its aims, it's often difficult to watch. Which is good.
Jenkins’ writing lacks grace...takes a pointer to the chalkboard over the tragic fate of her victims.
Will chill your blood and worm its way into your psyche for a longer stay than you may wish.
The film, and its cumulative emotional effect, is something of a brilliant, passionate, unflinching tour de force.
Theron's performance is a success, but it has the unfortunate side effect of overshadowing the rest of the movie.
An okay movie made nearly great by one great thing: the bravura, mercilessly watchable performance of Charlize Theron.
Improbable as it sounds in such a brutal protagonist, Aileen has a three-dimensional credibility.
Walks a very delicate line: It doesn't excuse or glamorize the actions of its main character, serial killer Aileen Wuornos (Charlize Theron), but it does offer an understanding of her -- or, at least, of the version of Wuornos this film presents.
The film works as a lurid death drop, but it invites us to cherish Aileen, to feel her pain no matter how low she goes.
