Mystery of the Nile is a breathtaking cinematic adventure that takes audiences on an expedition down the world’s greatest and most deadly river, the Blue Nile. For 114 days, a team of explorers led by Pasquale Scaturro and Gordon Brown face seemingly insurmountable challenges—class VI rapids, dangerous crocodiles and hippos, gunfire from bandits, malaria, sand storms and the fierce desert sun—as they make their way along all 3,250 miles of the river to became the first in history to complete a full descent of the Blue Nile from source to sea. Throughout the journey crossing Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt, the beauty and wonder of the magnificent Nile region are revealed as never before. -- © MacGillivray Freeman Films. [More]

  • Join a team of explorers on the expedition of a lifetime as they set off to become the first to navigate the Blue Nile from source to sea. The epic 3,260-mile descent down the world's greatest and deadliest river has eluded humankind for centuries - until now! Ride shotgun on the team's 16-foot rafts as they crash through the rapids in Ethiopia's desert canyons. Battle through some of the world's most extreme whitewater rapids with renowned kayaker, Gordon Brown. Over the arduous, four month journey, the team faces nearly insurmountable challenges - from crocodile attacks to armed bandits and arrests. Through breathtaking cinematography, Mystery of the Nile reveals a wondrous region and abundant treasures from Tissisat Falls and the wonders of Egypt to the forgotten black pyramids of Meroe and 12th century churches that were carved into sheer rock.

Although the title implies we are about to delve into the ancient past to discover the mysteries of the Nile, this IMAX big screen documentary is more of a combo of extreme sports with but a splash of history

Director Jordi Llompart packs so much material into a scant 47 minutes that you get the feeling that you've read a Cliffs Notes version of the journey when what you crave is the full fleshed-out story.

Mystery of the Nile is the sort of movie large-format theaters were made for: Daredevils do crazy things, and we experience them from the comfort of padded chairs.

The filmmakers document some of the more-difficult challenges the expedition faced, but they also provide an informative overview of the river's biology and history, as well as introducing some of the people who depend on the river.

A travelogue, more than an adventure saga, this IMAX film explores the Nile's cultural, agricultural and societal importance.

A lovely but sedate version of Scaturro and Brown's history-making adventure.

By patching together snippets from all these stories, then stitching them together with a cliched, lazily rendered script, this film does nothing but make us wonder what we've missed.

The courage, curiosity and perhaps partial insanity of the explorers -- not to mention the film crew -- are admirable, as their trials and tribulations yield stunning images galore.
