It doesn't help Bruce's cause that he is seen in archive footage to have been a smug, arrogant fellow; it's tempting to imagine that his memory has abandoned him in exasperation. A case of amnesia as overdue self-discovery, perhaps?

Modern Fabulousity

Suffers under a cloud of nostalgia and emotionality that turns the film's investigation into a fuzzy meditation on existence and memory.

Tend[s] to remain at a rather mundane level; they don't get past the obvious, to possibly more profound reflections on Bruce's situation.

Strangely for a film made by a friend, a detached and tentative point of view prevails.

For a film exploring the concept of memory, this well-intended, if slightly sensationalized documentary is nowhere near as memorable as it should've been.

A successful stock broker forgets it all and becomes a film maker. But not a very good one.

Hoax or no, the narrative can't escape death by a thousand newfangled iMac cuts.

It's quite an accomplishment to turn a deeply personal story about loss and pain into a droning clunker, but that's what Murray has done.

Despite the fact that Doug has amnesia, there's nothing really interesting about the guy or his friends that justifies spending 90 minutes with him

In the end, it fails to offer any insight into the philosophical question it poses.

There's a discomforting coldness in the film's almost clinical analysis and consequent distancing of subject from audience.

Unknown White Male tells a fascinating story. More's the pity that it's a bit of a chore to watch.

While the film raises simple but deeply puzzling questions about memory and identity, the hit-or-miss search for answers by the subject and assorted experts, family and friends is finally unsatisfying.

TV Guide's Movie Guide

The greatest mystery surrounding Rupert Murray's impressionistic documentary about a man who's lost his memory is neither whether it's real or an elaborate put-on (as persistent rumors suggest) but why it's so fundamentally unaffecting.
