although it doesn't have as much of an edge as their previous efforts and some of the material is not particularly fresh, the results are often hilarious.

Consensus: As the object of satire gets bigger the jokes become thinner, and Christopher Guest isn’t as droll or insightful here than when he was lampooning smaller subjects.

The plot follows... Arch satirist Christopher Guest (THIS IS SPINAL TAP, BEST IN SHOW) brings more mirth to the screen, providing an inimitable take on the film industry with FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. The plot follows the cast and crew of a fictional movie called HOME FOR PURIM, which is directed by Jay Berman (played by Guest himself) and stars an aging actress at the end of her career, Marilyn Hack (Catherine O'Hara); an actor best known for starring in a hotdog ad, Victor Allen Miller (Harry Shearer); and young Callie Webb (Parker Posey), who is trying to put her VAGINA MONOLOGUES-esque past (in a production called NO PENIS INTENDED) firmly behind her. As Berman and Co. attempt to bring HOME FOR PURIM to the screen, a variety of supporting players flits in and out of the movie, with Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Coolidge appearing as two very different producers, Jane Lynch and Fred Willard playing the glitzy hosts of trashy celebrity-obsessed TV show HOLLYWOOD NOW, and Bob Balaban appearing as a frustrated co-writer. This motley bunch all get along just fine until an Oscar buzz surrounds certain cast members, leading to a fierce explosion of wildly different ideas and ambitions for the film. Fans of Guest's movies will doubtless experience a welcome familiarity in the feel of FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. The usual deadpan wit, carefully crafted satire, and close attention to detail in everything from Fred Willard's haircut to the computer graphics of HOLLYWOOD NOW are all lovingly rendered, and Guest's loyal troupe of performers--as well as a sprinkling of new faces--delivers the material with habitual ease. In an era when most Hollywood comedy sticks to a strict, well-trodden formula, it's satisfying to find someone like Guest plowing a lonely furrow against the grain, and there's enough spark in FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION to suggest he still has plenty of wit yet to bestow on his faithful audience. Reviews for For Your Consideration
Jane Lynch and Fred Willard are consistent bright spots as "Entertainment Tonight"-style bozo TV hosts fanning the flames of Purim fever.
Individual scenes come across as amusing, but Guest loses comic momentum when he shifts between the shooting of the lachrymose Home for Purim and the segments lampooning entertainment media.
Fans of Guest's brand of repertory-company character comedies will find a few reasons to grin. But even the fanatical will have to admit that this one is hardly worth considering.
For Your Consideration always seems a bit too tame for its own good: It never busts out the way you hope it would.
[Director Christoper Guest] finds the absurd (and shares in the discovery with his cast) but always sees some human, tender truth behind the laugh lines. As a result, For Your Consideration is certainly worth your consideration.
Much of the funniest material is mined from the attendant media hoopla drummed up by the vacuous hosts of an "Entertainment Tonight"-style show hosted by predictably hilarious Fred Willard and Jane Lynch.
The real joy lies in watching some of the funniest actors on the planet nail their characters with penetrating wit and pitiless insight.
Inside the awfully good comedy For Your Consideration is a purely awful drama, dying to break out.
"For Your Consideration" is a good little movie, but coming from Guest, you expect something great. There's always next time.
Are Guest and Levy scared of biting the hand that feeds or simply out of touch? In either case, the answer can't be good.
I'd almost call O'Hara's performance "Oscar-worthy," if For Your Consideration didn't prove what a hollow curse that compliment can be.
Rather than taking aim at the movie industry... For Your Consideration decides to make fun of its hapless subjects.
All of the in-joke humor is so inside that some gags will likely go over heads of audience members. And the rest of the audience may feel the jokes just aren't that funny.
For Your Consideration is far from a failure, because Guest rounds up his usual sprawling ensemble to provide a variety of superb supporting parts.
With For Your Consideration, it's obvious the filmmakers got a few extra bucks to not only expand the repertoire, but to create a more complex story and abandon the gimmickry for a more satirical and insider movie.
You have to admire the economy of Guest's work, his ability to work on a small scale and his deadpan skill at keeping his actors on the emotional reservation -- calmly facing down emotional chaos.
Obvious and limp, a pale reflection of the quirky verve that marked its predecessors.
There are a lot of laughs to be mined from the spectacle of ego-inflated superstars tripping over each other trying to grab a $65 gold statue, but you won't find them here.
