For Your Consideration Reviews

Peter Bradshaw

The comedy is very unsubtle, and huge swathes of screen-time are given over to Fred Willard as a presenter on a dumb entertainment TV show - funny, yes, but not funny enough to justify the vast amount of time he is given.

In the most bittersweet of ironies, O'Hara was tipped by some as a potential Oscar nominee for her performance in the film. You suspect that she handled the whole demeaning circus with rather more dignity than her character does.

Lazy, smug and mean-spirited, this certainly isn't Spinal Tap or anywhere near as good as Guest and Levy's previous comedies. A mighty disappointment.

True, Hollywood's not difficult to caricature, but For Your Consideration is more than willing to savage the hand that feeds it.

We expect oddball wit of a higher calibre from Guest and co., although their inherent, zany likeability means plenty of laughs.

Funny, biting, cutting and satirical %u2026 but there are fewer laughs than expected; more likely to appeal to cult audiences interested in film industry in-jokes.

... the real problem with For Your Consideration is that it's just not funny.

Let's start the Internet buzz right now - we want an O-nod for O'Hara.

For Your Consideration is a funny movie, albeit a minor one alongside Guest's other comedies.

Here's another intelligent comedy "For Your Consideration" from Christopher Guest.

Guest and his troupe are clearly having fun poking fun at the industry that pays their bills while psychologically messing with them.

Is there a better group of actors today than Christopher Guest's troupe of improv players?

A film can't go to 11 when there are a dozen actors vying to be Nigel.

As usual, the result combines laughs with poignancy: O'Hara and Shearer, in particular, can be funny without reducing their characters to cartoons.

This goof (it's not really strong enough to qualify as a spoof, much less a satire) on Oscar fever descending on an indie production is particularly thin stuff.

The cast's semi-improvised schtick hits its mark with cutting precision, but the word on the street is that For Your Consideration can't be considered anything but a comic trifle.

Guest carves a plastic-surgery rictus into Catherine O'Hara's face that's as disturbing as the Gwynplaine smile cut into the title victim in 'The Black Dahlia' -- a literally ugly fate unjustified by the sketch-comedy antics that precede it.
