Stuck in a loveless marriage to intellectual George Tesman (Denis Lill), the ambitious Hedda Gabler (Diana Rigg) hungers for a life her husband can't provide. When a former flame, the successful Eilert (Philip Bond), enters the picture, violence and blackmail aren't far behind. Alan Dobie and Elizabeth Bell co-star in John Osborne's adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's play.

Diana Rigg plays the title role without remorse. Her Hedda suffers no fools and appears ready to strike like a coiled snake.
Fans of Diana Rigg will enjoy a jackpot in her remarkable performance as Ibsen's icy, manipulating, despairing bitch.
A boring, stuffy, high brow kind of movie without any big stars based on an old play. I didn't care for this movie, it's just too boring.

A filmed play if ever there was one this suffers from its stagebound origins even the outdoor scenes are obviously sets. Its heavy and sorrowful with a frankly despicable heroine but on the plus side the great Diana Rigg plays her well.
