Marvel Shopping Live-Action Doctor Strange Feature?
We're still waiting for a Howard the Duck remake.
Do you like superhero movies? We hope so -- and so does Marvel -- because if you don't, this next item is going to give you stomach pains. According to IESB, the flood of film adaptations for Marvel heroes continues unabated, and the studio's next project will supposedly be a live-action Doctor Strange feature.
The character has been around since the early '60s, and though he has never been one of the Marvel Universe's cornerstone titles, he has periodically played an important role in some of the company's major crossover story arcs -- as befitting the man known as the "Sorcerer Supreme," pretty much any time a major mystic threat rears its head, Stephen Vincent Strange is the go-to guy for the forces of good.
Literally almost nothing is known about the project, other than that it's in development, and that Marvel is looking for a director; the IESB report even goes so far as to say the script is "rumored to be written by an unnamed writer."

on Aug 16 2007 09:35 AM If I was Marvel I'd be doing the same thing, money, money, muhney. I'm just waiting for the full tilt Secret Wars $200 million battlefest. That would be sweet, or a huge Infinity Gauntlet film. Or a New Avengers film, the Avengers would be cool, but the New Avengers would be awesome. This country is capitalist-land; Marvel is a company who has already made billions off of you in comics alone, then t-shirts, posters, trading card/card games, board games, toys, coloring books, kids books, cups, toothbrushes but now they have made some movies they are sell-outs? Making a movie about a guy who wasn't even popular enough to have his own comic for a couple of decades? That is poor thinking. on Aug 16 2007 11:18 AM I was not excited at all for the Dr. Strange animated feature that just came out, but in my opinion it is the best animated feature Marvel has put out so far. on Aug 16 2007 01:15 PM Dr. Strange can be a deep and thoughtful character if done right. The DVD animated movie that was already mentioned is a classic example. I like Dr. Strange quite a bit as a character, even though I dispute that he needs his own comic title, and the universe constructed around his character is far more interesting and complex than anything Harry Potter has had to offer. Honestly, this would be better than Fantastic Four by lightyears. But will Marvel do the movie right like they did the DVD release? I'll reserve judgement on that until see how Iron Man turns out. :p (Reply to this) |

on Aug 16 2007 02:20 PM It's just unfortunate (from a creative standpoint anyway) that Marvel still has so many of their other high profile characters tied up with other studios, as it would be incredible to just have one big movie Marvel Universe. As it stands, they still have some heavy hitters at their disposal, and an Avengers movie could be a lot of fun, but it's impossible to do some of the bigger stories (even a NEW Avengers film, like someone else said) without Spider-Man, Wolverine and the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. I'm sure that Sony and Fox are in no hurry whatsoever to relinquish their rights to their respective cash cows, and I can't blame them at all, so we'll have to settle with what we can get right now. As far as the "Oh my God, I can't believe they're making a (Marvel character's name here) movie! That is sooooooo lame!" people go, do you realize that about the only thing Marvel HASN'T done with some of their characters is make them into movies? Even some of the "obscure" characters like Dr. Strange have had SOME presence in the mainstream since the 60's or 70's whether it was in cartoons, in TV movies, etc. These characters EXIST to create cash for the company, and if Marvel sees an opportunity to make even more money off of them, then good for them, and good for US as fans if they end up being enjoyable films.
