Five Favorite Films With Peter Jackson

We caught up with the Lovely Bones and Lord of the Rings director to ask the question...

KT

Peter Jackson has come a long way since his 1987 debut Bad Taste, a shoestring-budget splatter film shot in his native New Zealand that went on to earn a cult following. Yet there's something of that film's inventive and playful spirit in almost everything he's done since, be it bawdy puppets (1989's Meet the Feebles), killer teens (1994's Heavenly Creatures) or ice-skating apes (2005's King Kong). The Lord of the Rings trilogy made him a household name and earned him Oscar acclaim, while he's currently producing the long-awated prequel, The Hobbit, with Guillermo del Toro directing. As Jackson's latest, the murder-thriller-fantasy The Lovely Bones, arrives in cinemas, we caught up with him and asked him to name his all-time favorite films. He happily obliged. "My five favourite films of all time," Jackson pondered. "For different reasons, they would be... "

King Kong (1933, 100% Tomatometer)
King Kong King Kong -- the original 1933 King Kong, which is the film that got me interested in filmmaking when I saw it when I was eight years old.

Dawn of the Dead (1978, 95% Tomatometer)
Dawn of the Dead Another movie that absolutely blew my mind was George Romero's Dawn of the Dead. That was an unbelievable film at that time, and really it did shape my sense of humor and splatter style of filmmaking that I did.

The General (1927, 92% Tomatometer)
The General Buster Keaton's The General, from 1927, I think is still one of the great films of all time. They've just released a beautiful Blu-ray disc of that movie -- so if you haven't seen it, go get the Blu-ray and treat yourself to one of the most incredible filmmakers at the height of his power.

Goodfellas (1990, 96% Tomatometer)
Goodfellas Several films by Martin Scorsese -- I'm a huge fan of his -- but at the top I would say Goodfellas, probably, as my favorite Scorsese film. That's a movie that I always see when I feel that my imagination is kind of stuck and trapped, and I can't think of a way forward. I watch Goodfellas and suddenly it frees me up entirely; it reminds me of what great film directing is all about.

Jaws (1975, 100% Tomatometer)
Jaws The fifth movie, I would say... let me see... I would have to say it would probably be Jaws, 'cause I think that Jaws... it's the height of suspense for filmmaking, it was the start of the summer blockbuster, it was the beginning of an entire genre of filmmaking and obviously the beginning, in some respects, of Steven Spielberg's career. I think Jaws is a remarkable film.

Those are the five today. You ask me tomorrow and I might change of few of them. [laughs]

Well we all knew King Kong would be on there, haha. Good list from P.J.

Great list but I thought he would go for a more Sci-Fi inclined list.

Good list, little more mainstream than I thought it would be but who am i to complain, Goodfellas is one of my top 5 faves too.

Interesting clash of titles here, but fine choices indeed.

What a great list and the Hobbit is going to be beautiful with del Toro. The creative awesomeness that is the combination of these two is the only way to take Tolkien to the next level.

" you ask me tomorrow and I might change a few".... touche touche I can never have a list set in stone. Not too many on his list other than Goodfellas that I enjoyed enough to put on my favorites list.

Nice List. Love Peter Jackson's work. I'm interested to see The Lovely Bones. And I, for one, thought King Kong was great even though most criticize him for it and it underservedly flopped.

King Kong hardly flopped. It got overwhelmingly positive reviews from the critics on this site (83% Positive rating) and a worldwide box office of $550 million (while the production budget was just over $200 million). That's an extremely successful movie in my book. The only travesty to come out of king kong was no Academy Award Best Actress nomination for Naomi Watts.

@MDB_88 the Internet was generally unkind to Jackson's King Kong even though the movie did decent business and most critics liked it. Just another example of how warped the Internet consensus tends to be.

Jack Waters

Jack Waters on 12-21-2009 08:04 PM

Agreed.

Jack Waters

Jack Waters on 12-21-2009 08:07 PM

It was not the smash hit they were hoping for though. The production bidget was $207 million and it made $550 million worldwide. With advertising thrown in, that's a small profit considering the budget. And it got snubbed come award season. And the internet consensus was that it was bad. I loved the movie and feel it was a masterpiece achievment, but people definately did not feel the same way at the time.

@Jack Waters
Well you're not alone. All of my friends enjoyed it, though probably not as much as me (I'm a dinosaur nut).

For a spot-on dissection of why the average movie goer and even the average critic is not always in agreement with "the Internet" consensus, see Ashron's post near the end of the comment section of Avatar Oscar buzz. It's a great insight.

Very good list. I concur with Jackson on his list. I also love that he put Romero's Dawn of the Dead on his list.

King Kong had to be there, he often said it's what inspired him into films.

nice list by Jackson. Unfortunately "The Lovely Bones" turned out to be a disappointment, but it was more due to the choppy screenwriting. The vistas were certainly the highlight of the movie.

Jaws is one of the most perfect movies ever made. Everything works, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

I just don't think he was the right choice for the lovely bones. It missed what made the book so unique.....the movie tone was ketchup and ice cream contrast.....imHo

Love this list. Jaws has it all--great story, acting, local, suspense, f/x. its a classic. Goodfellas is as good as the Godfather IMHO. King Kong is so good that even poor quality vieo doesnt hurt it. And Dawn is the father of movies like Zombieland, and 28 days.

nathanpoitras- cant agree more. I saw Jaws for the first time about a year ago and i was stunned at how amazing it was even 34 years after it was released
