In short, it's Avatar for children -- the flying scenes are even better and it comes minus the bad language and violent gun battles.
I liked this movie a great deal, but the flying scenes in "Avatar" have a joy and wonder to them that this film can't even begin to match. "Dragon" is good, but "Avatar" is a masterpiece.

Avatar a masterpiece? And I suppose The Love Guru wasn't that bad?Seriously, Avatar is one of the most overrated movies out there. Sure it's good, but it has no genuine heart or imagination to it. Just a string of cliches.

Avatar was not a masterpiece, it could have been if it wasn't for the terrible and unoriginal story line. dragon, in my eyes was flawless and a masterpiece animated film.

I think you people are missing the point that aside from the fact that this movie was released like 4 months later, Avatar is freaking IRRELEVANT! These digital movies take a long ass time to make. They weren't like "oh avatar: flying things. Let's make a movie with flying things in it too!" and then they crapped a movie out in under 4 months. They were separate movies from separate studios and they have nothing to do with eachother. You god damn retards.

NOT!the flying sequences here are much more thrilling and involving... they have more heart than avatar

HTTYD had better flying sequences. More heart, more thrill, i actually got goosebumps at one scene, Avatar never did that. In Avatar the scenes look cool, but in this one they look cool as well as touching and necessary

How to Train Your Dragon is definitely MUCH better than Avatar (and I actually did enjoy Avatar despite its cliches). Dragon is probably one of the best movies I have ever seen. The picture is stunning, the music captivating, and the characters all have REAL personality. Avatar lacked these elements. One of the flying scenes in HTTYD left me with goosebumps and a breathless feeling of enrichment -- as stupid as it may sound. Dragon in general has beautiful cinematography and a wonderful soundtrack that seems to hug you from the inside... Avatar's flying scenes were riveting and looked cool, but they didn't invoke any emotion using just cinematography.

As* childish as films get.

Screw you! This film was WAY better than Avatar and the flying scenes way more dramatic and well crafted. I am 20 years old and certainly never considered it an "Avatar for kids" while watching it. I more felt it was an "Avatar if it had been an original story".I liked Avatar, don't get me wong, but it was one of the most overrated films of all time. Personally I felt How to train your dragon grounded it into the dust.

Avatar a masterpiece? Robert B., you're entitled to your opinion and I'm not ridiculing you for it, but I fully disagree. I'll have to see this film (hopefully tomorrow) and judge my opinion on it, though. Heck, I even enjoyed Avatar, but without the spellbinding special effects, it really wouldn't have been very good. I've heard plenty of people say this is better.

there is no comparison what so ever linking Dragon and Avatar...dont like the way you described this and whoevers reading this shouldnt try to compare either. If you must find something-then its a movie for your entertainment along with avatar, just leave it at that and focus on how its not the same. Comapring these pieces of hard work is thoughtless and disrespectful to the people who put the effort and time into it. Thoughtless, as in "i dont feal like thinking sooooo wait..i saw a dragon in avatar! Ya..annd wasnt that in 3-D too? ok then thats that, there the same."

These two movies (Avatar and Dragon) are basically only alike in that they are both movies. Other than that, they are completely different and independent films in their own right. Both are cinematic masterpieces. They should not be called 'the same', period.
