RT Interview: Golden Globe Winner Sally Hawkins
by Jen Yamato | February 03, 2009
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

After winning Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival, the Golden Globes, and a score of critics' circles for her ebullient performance in Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky, actress Sally Hawkins seemed a lock for an Oscar nomination -- or in the least, a BAFTA nod. Instead, in this awards season's most shocking oversight, the crowd-pleasing comedy only won Leigh an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Somebody call the Oscar police: Sally Hawkins has been robbed. Back to Article

If anyone who saw her performance still has even the slightest respect for the Oscars...could you let me know what you're smoking?

First the best female performance of 07 gets snubbed (Amy Adams) and now this?

Sally was effervescent! I love all of Mike Leigh's films and each one produces an unforgettable performance: David Thewlis in "Naked", Brenda Blethyn in "Secrets and Lies", Lynda Steadman in "Career Girls", Timothy Spall in "All or Nothing" and, of course, Sally Hawkins in "Happy Go Lucky."

Of course this movie was ignored by mainstream Hollywood. The characters are real, their lives remind us of our own, their stories enthralling. Yes, not nominating Sally was a huge snub, but, in a way, it is actually a compliment to her brilliant performance that refuses to fit neatly onto any tired, old shelf.

Sally Hawkins is a great actress now, and the Oscars were a little careless. I hope she eats until her next film, seeing her at the Globes made me want to turn away. She's too skinny. Great actress.

She's the girlfriend of the Duke in Layer Cake right?

Hawkins had easily the best female performance of 2008. Noone really came close. Plain and simple. If you try to argue Kate Winslet or Anne Hathaway, then you haven't seen this movie. Those performance were good in their own right, but pale in comparison to Hawkins.
