Critics Consensus: Fighting Is Down For The Count
Also, The Soloist Falls Flat, but Earth Is Impressive
by Tim Ryan | April 23, 2009
Discuss Article

This week at the movies, we've got bare-knuckle bouts (Fighting, starring Channing Tatum and Terrence Howard), the wonders of nature (Earth, narrated by James Earl Jones), a musical friendship (The Soloist, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx), and some office intrigue (Obsessed, starring Idris Elba and Beyonce Knowles). What do the critics have to say?

Fighting

Look, you pretty much know what you're getting into with a movie called Fighting: lots of tough-as-nails dudes beating the stuffing out of each other. And the pundits say that while director Dito Montiel does his best to infuse interesting characterization and a sense of place, Fighting is still a shopworn underdog sports movie. Channing Tatum stars as a kid who's just arrived in New York City from Alabama; after attempting to make a living on the streets, he falls in with a sketchy character (Terrence Howard) who realizes he may be a natural fit for the world of underground bare-knuckle brawls. The pundits say Fighting is a bit better than its setup would suggest, with a good deal of energy and a dash of gritty authenticity. However, others say the performances are a mixed bag and the script is ultimately weighted down by clichés. (Check out Terrence Howard's Five Favorite Films.)

Earth

The popular award-winning BBC series Planet Earth offered some staggeringly beautiful images of life around the globe. If the small screen version was too limited to contain such visual majesty, now comes its multiplex companion: Earth, which critics say is a remarkable document with a timely message. Narrated by (who else?) James Earl Jones, Earth focuses on three mother/child relationships in the animal kingdom, following the exploits of polar bears, humpback whales, and African elephants. The pundits say Earth doesn't offer a ton of insight, but the images on display are so gorgeous that viewers are unlikely to quibble too much. Plus, it invites audiences to reflect upon our place in the larger ecosystem. Earth is Certified Fresh.

The Soloist

The Soloist tells an inspiring true story, and its stars and director are Oscar nominees. But distinguished pedigree does not a movie make, and critics say The Soloist is too uneven to fully resonate. Robert Downey Jr. stars as Steve Lopez, an LA Times reporter who befriends, and writes movingly about, a homeless, profoundly mentally ill man named Nathaniel Ayers, who was once a virtuoso cellist. The pundits say all the elements are here for a moving tale, and Downey and Foxx give it everything they've got; unfortunately, that's not enough to overcome the film's lack of focus and maudlin stretches. (Check out this week's Total Recall, in which we count down Downey's best-reviewed films, and find out director Joe Wright's Five Favorite Films).

Obsessed

It appears the folks behind Obsessed were dubious that critics would be, ahem, obsessed with their film. Hence, it wasn't screened prior to its release. The movie stars Idris Elba as a successful asset manager who's happily married -- to Beyonce, no less -- before an attractive, brazen office temp (Ali Larter) threatens to bring his world crashing down. Kids, it's time to guess that Tomatometer!

Also opening this week in limited release:

  • Throw Down Your Heart/a>, a documentary about banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck's journeys through Africa, is at 100 percent.
  • Tyson, a candid portrait of the life and hard times of Iron Mike from James Toback, is at 86 percent.
  • The Korean import Treeless Mountain, a meditative drama about two young girls who learn to live without their mother, is at 85 percent.
  • Il Divo, a stylistically daring biopic about the controversial Italian politician Giulio Andreotti, is at 82 percent.
  • Mutant Chronicles, starring Ron Perlman and Thomas Jane in a dystopian sci-fi flick in which soldiers are dispatched to defeat a mutant army, is at 18 percent (check out Perlman's Five Favorite Movies here).
  • The Informers, starring Billy Bob Thornton and Kim Basinger in a drama about party-hearty Los Angeles residents in the early 1980s, is at 14 percent.

Finally, props to Brendan C. for correctly guessing Crank High Voltage's 63 percent Tomatometer.

"Obsessed" - Zero percent. I'm in a bad mood.

I'd rent "Earth". Nothing else for me.

Obsessed 23%

Such a shame for Soloist, could of been amazing. Maybe the studio had a good thing going for it when they moved the realease date, they knew it wasn't Oscar material, and so they went for a more profitable realease day. Suckers.

Man, I was hoping for a better showing from the Soloist, especially given the director's past efforts. Oh well, I'll probably go out to see it anyway if there are no better films playing nearby (which is basically a given when all that are close by are AMCS). I'm saying 34%, and I hope that once Obsessed opens, I won't have to see any more damn previews for it.

26% for Obsessed.

I had a bad feeling about the Soloist when I noticed the delay in release. It probably had some bad audience testing and it was tweeked. Still, I was never into seeing it as it seemed like an easy vehicle for the actors.

If I'm going to see Earth, I'd catch it on the big screen.

Nothing worth seeing this weekend. OBSESSED looks like a neutered FATAL ATTRACTION, which was trash as well. But this doesn't even look as good as DISCLOSURE. Like the (one) reviewer posted, it's just a reason for Beyonce's core demographic to watch her beat up a skinny white chick.

Less than 20% on the Tomatometer. BUT...it will probably open with around $20 million.

No way obsessed does 20m, I'm guessing more like 10-13m with a tomatometer of 20%

Earth was great the first time I saw it when it was Planet Earth....on blu ray....in my living room, c'mon Disney, jesus.

Obsessed- 22%

'The Soloist' looks a heck of a lot like 'Resurrecting the Champ' crossed with "Reign Over Me" (not a compliment). And I think Jamie Foxx is way overrated.

I can't wait to see 'Fighting' because I love movies with clever titles. Like that vampire movie I love, what's it called again? Oh, yeah, 'Vampires'. And then there's my favorite racing movie, 'Racing'. And my favorite sports movie 'Baseball'.

'Earth' looks good and I love good nature filming....but, as was said earlier, 'Planet Earth' is probably better or watching any of the David Attenborough specials. And, also, given that Disney is releasing it...we can pretty much be assured its relatively neutered as far as intensity goes. Still, I'll probably check it out upon DVD release. Everything else this week looks like a total pass...I wouldn't even watch a minute of 'Fighting' or 'Obsessed' if they were on cable TV on a boring night (granted, Ali Larter is gorgeous, but I'll just watch Heroes instead haha.) I was hoping 'the Soloist' would be good, but it looks like it will turn out to be a failure. Oh well, looks like next week might be even more heartbreaking as the early word on Wolverine is really bad, which bums me out.
