Box Office Wrapup: Zac Attacks #1 Spot with 17 Again

State of Play and Monsters vs. Aliens round out the top three.

This weekend Zac Efron scored his second number one opener in six months as his non-musical high school comedy 17 Again debuted powerfully in the top spot to lead the North American box office to another impressive year-over-year gain. Russell Crowe's murder thriller State of Play bowed in second place while Jason Statham's action sequel Crank High Voltage limped to a weak sixth place opening.

Efron proved that he could draw a sizable crowd of paying customers outside of his safe Disney zone with 17 Again which premiered with an estimated $24.1M winning this weekend's box office race by a wide $10M margin. The PG-13 film about a thirtysomething dad who transforms back to a teenage kid averaged a very solid $7,393 from 3,255 locations. Teens and young adults turned out in strong numbers and the teen heartthrob's large fan base certainly followed their superstar into new territory. Efron's High School Musical 3 carried a G rating while the musical Hairspray in which he had a supporting role was rated PG. And with 17 Again not being based on a property with a built-in audience, it proved that Efron can certainly open a film on his own when starring in the right type of project. For Warner Bros., it was the studio's industry-leading fifth number one opener of 2009. No other distributor has more than two this year.

Landing in second with a decent showing was the conspiracy thriller State of Play which took in an estimated $14.1M from 2,803 theaters. Averaging a commendable $5,030 per site, the PG-13 film stars Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Helen Mirren, Jason Bateman, Robin Wright Penn, and Rachel McAdams. Reviews were solid for the Universal release which played to a mature crowd not being served by all the younger-skewing pics in the marketplace. According to studio research, State's audience was 55% female and 75% over 35.

Three hit holdovers followed with estimates between $12-13M. Final grosses to be reported on Monday could see chart positions change.

Paramount and DreamWorks claimed third place with the animated blockbuster Monsters vs. Aliens which became the top-grossing movie of 2009. The comic actioner grossed an estimated $12.9M falling 41% in its fourth frame to boost the cume to a stellar $162.7M. Monsters also surpassed the $154.5M of last spring's Horton Hears a Who which was the top grosser during the first four months of 2008. Monsters vs. Aliens is now on course to become the third biggest non-Shrek toon in DreamWorks history after last summer's Kung Fu Panda ($215.4M) and 2005's Madagascar ($193.2M).

Disney's Hannah Montana: The Movie was close behind with an estimated $12.7M representing a steep 61% crumble in the second weekend. A large fall was expected but the sophomore slide was a bit less than those for last year's Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds and High School Musical 3 which were 67% and 64%, respectively. The new Hannah has banked an impressive $56.1M in ten days and could reach $80M by the end of its run.

Fast & Furious took in an estimated $12.3M, falling 55% in its third lap, and boosted its 17-day take to a strong $136.7M. Universal's hit sequel ruled the international box office again grossing an estimated $36M this weekend from 59 territories including powerful top spot bows in Australia, Italy, and China. Total is now $145M offshore and $281.7M worldwide easily making it the highest-grossing installment of the series globally. The Furious franchise has now raced to a stunning $881M worldwide across four films.

Five Jason Statham action films in 15 months seemed to be too much for fans to handle as the actor's latest effort Crank High Voltage stumbled with an estimated $6.5M debut putting it in sixth place. The R-rated Lionsgate sequel averaged a not-so-heartpumping $2,928 from 2,223 locations. The opening not only was weaker than the bow of 2006's Crank ($10.5M, $4,158 average) but it also fell sharply from the debuts of Statham's last two films Death Race ($12.6M, $4,985 average) and Transporter 3 ($12.1M, $4,594 average).

Suffering the worst drop of any film in the top ten was Seth Rogen's latest comedy Observe and Report which tumbled 63% to an estimated $4.1M. Moviegoers could be getting too much of this star as well. The Warner Bros. release has collected $18.7M in ten days and should finish in the vicinity of $25M. The Nicolas Cage actioner Knowing followed with an estimated $3.5M, off 46%, pushing the total to $73.7M for Summit making it one of the top ten highest-grossing new releases of the year.

Two more hits rounded out the top ten. Paramount's Paul Rudd comedy I Love You, Man dropped 46% to an estimated $3.4M putting the cume at $64.7M. The fright flick The Haunting in Connecticut grossed an estimated $3.2M, down 47%, and lifted its sum to $51.9M for Lionsgate.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $96.6M which was up 21% from last year when The Forbidden Kingdom opened in the top spot with $21.4M; and up 40% from 2007 when Disturbia stayed at number one with $13M.

Thats to bad about Crank 2, I thought it was awesome and I loved it. I even liked it more then the first movie. Hopefully word of mouth helps it out and it picks up more money, and when it inevitably makes a crap load on DVD there could be a third movie. It also sucks for Observe and Report, though its budget was only like 18 million they aren't going to lose that much money. I still believe it will make a ton on DVD and become a cult classic. God help the people who contributed to the 52 million for The Haunting in Connecticut...

I remember first seeing the trailer for 17 Again and thinking it was going to be pretty dumb. Still don't think it looks all that great, but maybe I'll rent it when it comes out in 3-6 months.

Is MvA going to be the next Paul Blart in that is has a weak story but it'll stay in the top ten for the longest time? At least until Up takes all the children-parent audience.

SplendidIsolation on 04-19-2009 07:38 PM

MvA was pretty good, actually. Will it be on the same caliber as Up? No. Is it much better than Blart? Absolutely.

It's too bad a Zac Efron movie keeps good movies like Crank 2 and State Of Play from making more money. Even if Jason Staham is flooding the action movie market, the Crank movies are better than Transporter 3 or Death Race. People should know a good movie when they see one. But on the bright side, Hannah Montana had a 60% drop in ticket sales.

Wow. I was wrong about Crank as far as critic opinion goes. I predicted 25%, oops! I also thought it might be paper-cutter like the first Crank so I was going to wait for it on DVD, now I may see it in the theaters. . .

Bush and his cronies were truly revolutionary! Not only did they succeed at sucking every dollar out of the economy, but they succeeded at sucking every bit of life out of the arts. Of course, the Prez's buddy, the great Lady O, didn't help matters.

Only kiddie movies seem to survive in this climate. Even the best villian since Hannibal Lector was treated with kiddie gloves.

So gone are the big action movies of the 80s. The action stars were replaced by Statham and his ilk. Gone are the sex thrillers and teenage sex comedies of the 80s/90s (in fact, gone is sex in movies, period). Gone are the horror movies of the 80s, which were replaced by watered down versions of themselves. And etc.

Movies have lost their cojones. And thanks to director Snyder, and a few others, they may not get them back any time soon.

v-alexander-the-great on 04-19-2009 08:32 PM

What are you going on about? You make absolutely no sense. Sex comedies are gone?? Nearly every hit comedy recently has been based around sex or relationships. Zack and Miri, Superbad, Knocked Up, 40 year old Virgin, other Judd Apatow (or company) movies. Wasn't there a movie called SEX drive that came out last year? Plus even movies that aren't based on sex feature very crude content that would have never been in movies in the 80's.

As for violence, didn't Watchmen just come out, which pushed the limits in nearly EVERY respect (including sex)? And last year we had Rambo, which was one of the goriest movies I've ever seen.

Your post, it is, how you say, nonsense.

I have to second you. Nothing against the guy but he seems the kind of people who doesn't like to live in the present and has obviously has not seen Zack and Miri and I liked the 80's and yes there were great movies but there are also great movies today. Don't worry sa. You'll get the expendables next year plus inglorious bastard's this year.

Crank 2 will succeed on word of mouth. The movie was so damn crazy, even if a person hated the movie and attempted to explain any scene to another person, that other person would have to see the movie based on just how ****ing ridiculous it sounds. It will succeed. It has to. We need more movies like it!

It looks like something you see staight to dvd it and looks awful like a piece of trash but, that's my opinion however judging by how much it made I may be right.

Why don't any Film columnists want to acknowledge how "17 Again" is seemingly an update of "18 Again"? Very similar premises. You mean to tell me I'm 25 and I know about a George Burns movie...while no one who works for a reputable MOVIE site can pick up on that small tidbit?

And if it's not directly a remake...then it's a pretty shoddy rehash.

i saw i love you man again over the weekend. i thought it was better the second time around, and i'm really happy to see it's hanging onto a spot in the top 10 after 5 weeks in release. and i'm also happy that it's pulled in over $60 million. it can't have been made for more than $15 million. maybe $20 million.

I enjoyed 17 again. Zac does a great 17 year old version of Mathew Perry. It is a sweet romance and family film and deserves to do well. It is not even the same crowd as anything but Hannah Montanna so there really was no competition this week for it. Action and drama are for the adults. Tween guys will see this movie as a date film.

brandon s. on 04-20-2009 01:05 AM

I really want to see Crank 2 and Observe & Report.....both of them look totally off the wall and insane with absolutely zero regard to the censors...which is great. Of course, without a good movie that means nothing, but the reviews of both look good enough to warrant a big screen viewing. I haven't had any good dark humor in a while....

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 04-20-2009 06:24 AM

Crank 2 needs to be waaaaaayyyyyy better than it's predecessor to even remotely interest me. I think a log of people are finally starting to hold Statham accountable for the brainless schlock that is Crank and more so the Transporter franchises. Put some effort into it man, you could be great.

Solonik -.

Solonik -. on 04-20-2009 08:53 AM

They are action movies dude. How much more effort could Statham be putting into the role of renaissance man of ***-kicking? Seriously now, what is with all these people demanding more from these movies than they clearly promise. Transporter franchise = guy who carries and protects packages with a skill set primarily in bad-assness used to protect said packages. Crank franchise = hitman with skill set in badassness who is averse from doing anything without tearing up people and objects in his surroundings apart vis a vis psycho over the top action sequences. Let me put it another way some people might understand, when you play an open world game, do you always follow the missions and do what the game wants? Sometimes you just gotta run around and chuck grenades into groups of cars.
What are people expecting out of these movies anyways?? These are not works of art nor are they meant to be, honestly, I think if they even attempted to be remotely serious they would come across not only stupid but also pretentious. It's like wondering why Hannah Montana movies don't have better tracking shots of concerts or monologues by a tortured teen artist who is forced by her father and her sponsors to live a lie that she never really wanted for herself in the first place. All I am saying is I don't think every movie is intended to be a brilliant display of film talent. Sometimes, these films are just intended to entertain a specific target audience such as preteen/teen girls (Hannah Montana), or hardcore action movie fans (Crank 2).

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 04-20-2009 10:49 AM

You;ve just encapsulated my argument for me. No one expects anything anymore because they're "just action movies". People used to expect the same thing they expected from other movies from action movies i.e. plot, interesting characters and dialog all of which was augmented by gratuitous violence and flashy explosions. It kills me to say, because I used to love them so much, but Horror and Action genre's have become pale imitations of themselves. Is it because all the good stories have already been told? I don't think so. Is it because people no longer want good action movies? Again no. IMO it's because folks like Eli Roth and Mr. Statham are content to throw out the hollow movies with nothing but uber-violence and blood and gore respectively and expect us to eat it up because it's "Just a (Insert genre here) movie". My comment was just an expression of hope that once again we could start expecting more.

Well 17 again and Zac is at top, grabbing $24M weekend , no wonder....Approximately $60M domestic will do fine..Movie is not bad, neither good..Few years later we will remember it only because Zac Efron.
And the second place goes to State of Play, it's a little surprise , but that means only one thing. Audience still wants to see Russell Crowe and the movie is better than good, except there are similar movies like this one opening each year. Race for third place was interesting,Sunday 44% drop prohibited willing third place for Hannah Montana but helped,Monsters and Aliens grab the last podium finish.Fast and Furious got the fifth place, this time fast cars and good-looking girls was replaced with also good looking Wildcat..And i think the most disappointing movie this weekend was Crank, probably with less Voltage then anybody expected.Only $6M at weekend well at least the movie wasn't bad. And the last thing, movie, Adventureland with only $14M total after 17 days, the poster reminded Superbad, but the movie is worth to see, without doubt.

JRW1980 on 04-20-2009 09:37 AM

To comment on the article about State of Play's audience....It was very weird for the showing I went to. 95% of the audience was in their 70s or older. There were tons of old married couples there too. It did make me feel a little bit out of place..............As far as this fight about Observe and Report; who gives a ****. Anyone who reads my posts on here knows I am not a fan of Apatow or his flunkies. I personally would love to see all of his films take a sudden nosedive in popularity and let someone new and talented come in for a fresh wave of comedies. It does put a bit of a smile on my face to see that it's not number 1 but just because Observe and Report failed at the box office doesn't mean it sucks. Plenty of movies I thought were horrible did well at the box office and ones I loved did poorly. There are many factors in why a movie does or doesn't do well. I didn't go see Observe and Report so I can't comment on if it was good or not. If you didn't like it fine. If you did, fine. Don't just claim it must suck because it underperformed.

Playboy Slim

Playboy Slim on 04-20-2009 09:48 AM

JRW, are you saying I don't like it because of it's box office? No, that's not the case at all! I don't like it because I found it to be the meanest "comedy" since "Bad Boys II".There are plenty of underperforming movies I love, like "The Shawshank Redemption". And for the record, "Observe and Report" is no "Shawshank Redemption".

tomwaitsjrHAPPYICONOCLAST

tomwaitsjrHAPPYICONOCLAST on 04-20-2009 11:55 AM

Observe and Report did a bs "hommage" rip-off of "Taxi Driver." Most noticeably, the voice over and what was said during the V.O.

I can give more examples, but thankfully by most of my brain cells used to watch Observe and Report are now dead.
