The film would have been better served by a stronger sense of the metaphor it was trying to construct, but as it is, the unravelling of the puzzle is underwhelming.
"In all this, what British writer-director Chris Smith is saying about maternal guilt and depression is not clear". I think you need to be a woman to understand what he is trying to say, it's simple. She wants a do-over, she wants her son back. Whatever it takes. It would not have worked with a paternal angle. They just wouldn't tend to be as desperate to get their child back.
