You wrote: "If all it takes is another cute guy to go drinking with, and to make love to, to make George forget about his dead partner and the world they shared..."
Boy did you miss the point! That wasn't what happened at all. First, they didn't make love or even Really confirm the intent. But even so - hello! - if that had been the whole point then the Spanish guy would have sufficed.
No! What actually happened was that he was Seen, that the boy Saw that he was in trouble, that he was in danger, knew enough to take the gun, came to stop him. He said he saw things so differently - he didn't mean just because he might've been gay, but that he had the ability to See. Remember the comment about blue being a spiritual colour...
The point was that someone Knew - saw through all the cover stories and the personality. And Cared - even enough to act.
And that even that wasn't Quite enough - that his spirit chose to leave anyway, but to leave healed. What a gift. That movie was pure blessing.

Thanks for trying, but this critic will never understand the complexities of this movie. As you point out successfully, Rea hasn't a clue of what is going on. I don't begrudge anyone's likes or dislikes, but make an effort to to be smarter than a fifth grader.
