Weekly Ketchup: Alice in Wonderland Sequel Planned

Plus, sequel news for Tintin, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and The Muppets

This was a relatively slow week in the realm of movie development news, as most sites were busy covering the various awards season nominations, or providing links to any of the various trailers that will be in theaters this weekend with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. What did get announced this week includes sequels for The Adventures of Tintin, Alice in Wonderland, The Muppets, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and Transformers, new movie adaptations of Angry Birds and The Equalizer, and new roles for Glenn Close, Will Ferrell, Nick Nolte, and Michael Shannon.

This Week's Top Story

DISNEY PLANS RETURN TRIP FOR ALICE IN WONDERLAND

The billion dollar success of 2010's Alice in Wonderland has inspired Walt Disney Pictures to greenlight a series of live action movies based on classic fantasy stories that includes 2013's Oz the Great and the Powerful, 2014's Maleficent (based on Sleeping Beauty), and probably for 2015, a new version of Cinderella. This week, the news broke that Disney is also planning a much more direct answer to the success of that film, in the form of an Alice in Wonderland sequel. To that end, Disney has hired that film's screenwriter Linda Woolverton (who also worked on Maleficent). What isn't known is anything else, including a premise, or whether Tim Burton will be returning to fill the director's chair.

Fresh Developments This Week

#1 PETER JACKSON'S TINTIN SEQUEL STILL ON TRACK FOR 2015 RELEASE

In the past year since the release in 2011 of The Adventures of Tintin, pretty much all of the movie development news relating to director Peter Jackson has been about The Hobbit, and in particular, the move to expand that adaptation from two movies to three. The notion that Jackson was also planning on directing a Tintin sequel (after Steven Spielberg directed the first) has seemingly almost been forgotten. Well, not so fast, as Jackson confirmed this week that he plans on doing the stop motion filming on the second film in 2013, so that it can still make the planned 2015 release window. This filming of the second Adventures of Tintin film joins the estimated 6 to 8 weeks of additional filming that Jackson is also planning on doing in 2013 for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: There and Back Again. The 2015 release target for the second Tintin film also means that for the first time ever, there will be four movies directed by Peter Jackson in as many consecutive years. There's still no word on who might direct the third planned Tintin movie.

#2 THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE TO BE SLINGSHOTTED INTO THEATERS IN THE SUMMER OF 2016

We're not even out of 2012 yet, and movies are already being scheduled for the summer of 2016. Producer John Cohen (Despicable Me) is teaming up with Rovio Entertainment for the 3D CGI animated adaptation of the hit mobile video game franchise Angry Birds. The game, which just this week celebrated its third anniversary, tells the epic story of a bunch of birds that are propelled via slingshots at pigs sitting on crudely erected structures. That pretty much nails what Angry Birds is about, except for the "epic" and "story" parts. John Cohen previously collaborated with Illumination Entertainment for Despicable Me, but it's not yet known what animation studio will be working on the Angry Birds movie, or what studio might be distributing.

#3 DRIVE DIRECTOR NICOLAS WINDING REFN TO ESCORT THE EQUALIZER

Sony Pictures has had an adaptation of the 1980s TV series The Equalizer on their schedule for April 11th, 2014 for a while now, with Denzel Washington attached to star, but until now, it hasn't seemed to make much of an impact with fans online. The anticipation level for The Equalizer may have cranked up considerably as of this week's news that Nicolas Winding Refn has signed on. The Danish director is still hardly a household name in the USA, but his 2011 film Drive was very well received by critics, and well regarded by many moviegoers (those who weren't expecting it to be a Fast and the Furious clone, anyway). The late Edward Woodward starred in the original CBS TV series as a retired intelligence officer who offers his services to those in need by way of an anonymous advertisement in the newspaper.

#4 TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY SEQUEL IN THE WORKS

The British 2011 espionage thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy probably isn't remembered by most as one of that year's big box office successes, but with only a $21 million budget, its $80 million worldwide gross was a nice ROI regardless. And so, Swedish director Tomas Alfredson (who also directed Let the Right One In) is now working with screenwriter Peter Straughan on a sequel to that adaptation of the novel by John Le Carre. That's what was confirmed this week by producer Eric Fellner, but what's currently not verified is what exactly the sequel will be adapting (if any specific novel at all). Gary Oldman did say earlier this year that a sequel based on the novel Smiley's People was being considered, although that's hardly a firm confirmation. If the sequel does end up being Smiley's People, then it would be about Oldman's character having to come out of retirement following the death of one of his agents, a covert Soviet general. The confusing element about all of this is that Smiley's People was actually the third novel of a trilogy, with the second of Le Carre's Smiley novels being The Honorable Schoolboy.

#5 TY BURRELL FROM MODERN FAMILY IS THE NEW LEAD IN THE NEXT MUPPETS MOVIE

"Ty Burrell has replaced Christoph Waltz" is a phrase that will almost certainly never be used in any movie news story ever again. The movie in question is Disney's follow up to 2011's The Muppets, and the role is that of an Interpol agent following the Muppets around as they travel through Europe as part of a caper storyline. Anyone who watches Modern Family knows that Burrell is an odd choice to play an Interpol agent, but given that this is a Muppets movie... that's probably the point (and may actually be why Christoph Waltz is being replaced). James Bobin, who directed The Muppets, is returning for this currently untitled sequel as well, which Disney currently has scheduled for release on December 20, 2013.

#6 SAMANTHA MORTON AND MICHAEL SHANNON TEND THE HARVEST FOR THE DIRECTOR OF WILD THINGS

It's been so long now that it might be hard to put it within context, but there was a time in the 1990s when John McNaughton was considered one of the hot young rising star directors of the time, with a career that began in 1990 with Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and included 1998's Wild Things. McNaughton has still been getting work, mostly on cable TV, but it's with a new independently produced movie called The Harvest that his career finally appears likely to be returning to the big screen. Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire) and Samantha Morton (Minority Report) will star in the psychological thriller as a married couple who keep their ill son secluded, until the arrival of a new neighbor in the form of a young girl "unravels the overprotective parents' strictly regulated world."

#7 KEVIN HART TO HELP WILL FERRELL GET HARD

Comic actors Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart (Think Like a Man) are attached to star in the comedy Get Hard, which Warner Bros is currently in negotations to produce and distribute. If production moves forward, Ferrell will star as an investment banker sentenced to serve at a maximum security prison who recruits his car washer (Hart) to get him physically and mentally prepared. If Warner Bros picks up the pitch, Get Hard will be written by the screenwriting team of Ian Roberts and Jay Martel, who are executive producers of the Comedy Central sketch program Key & Peele.

Rotten Ideas of the Week

#2 NICK NOLTE AND GLENN CLOSE TO STAR IN THE ALZHEIMER'S DRAMA ALWAYS ON MY MIND

This article was an example of one where this writer had to check facts before presuming he knew of a movie that Nick Nolte and Glenn Close starred in together before. Glenn Close isn't Barbra Streisand (The Prince of Tides), Susan Sarandon (Lorenzo's Oil), or Jessica Lange (Cape Fear), and Nick Nolte, well, there's really no one that you could confuse Nick Nolte with (though I did consider that maybe he was in The Big Chill). The movie that will finally be bringing these actors together is called Always on My Mind, and it is the story of an aging rock star (Nolte) coping with Alzheimer's, with his wife left to "pick up the pieces of his hard-lived rock n' roll life." The reason that Always on My Mind is one of the Rotten Ideas this week is that it's the next movie from writer/director Chris D'Arienzo, who created the Broadway musical Rock of Ages, and cowrote the recent movie adaptation of that play, which has a "Rotten" RT Tomatometer score of 41%.

#1 MORE CASTING NEWS FOR TRANSFORMERS 4 MEANS IT'S STILL HAPPENING

Unless the Mayans were right, the world is going to go on, and there's still going to be Transformers movies directed by Michael Bay. Earlier this year, Mark Wahlberg was confirmed as being the new lead actor of Transformers 4, and now, we have learned that Wahlberg's teenage daughter will be played by Nicola Peltz (The Last Airbender), and her "biker boyfriend" will be played by Brenton Thwaites (Blue Lagoon: The Awakening). Or, maybe the world will explode before I finish typ

Who used gay as a negative? Its usage here was not in the slang pejorative but in the accepted colloquial meaning homosexual.

How do you know he was using it as a negative? Other than the fact that it was posted on a message board on the internet. Maybe you perception of the word gay is always negative because it's been used in a negative connotation for so long.

Interestingly enough, there are many levels of this expertly crafted joke.

One being the literal, that the two actors in question are in a film called "Get Hard" which may be a simple innuendo or it may be in reality a film about the two being homosexuals in this film. Therefore the observation is quite correct.

However, another probable explanation is the usage of the title, "Get Hard" and the term gay to do a play on words with the popular Japanese comedian and sometimes internet meme "Hard Gay"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masaki_Sumitani
In which case it also works.

The third is the idea that in prison, homosexual sex and/or rape is fairly commonplace in the American prison system and therefore it works on that level because in prison you can â??Get Hardâ?? as in toughen up from defending yourself and your buttocks, or the other inmates can â??Get Hardâ?? as in getting ready to make you their boyfriend at the sight of your fleshy buttocks.

So to sum up:

Gay in a literal sense it works.
Gay in reference to Hard Gay it also works.
Gay in reference to the general homosexual atmosphere in prison it works as well.

Plus it made me chuckle.

The joke is already implied by the title of the film. Lars pointing it out to make his own joke about it doesn't work. It's simply redundant and takes away and subtlety--not that that was very possible.

Since Burton's "Alice" incorporated the Jabberwocky, and other elements of "Through the Looking Glass", I'm not sure what material is left for a sequel. A Chinese Red Queen?

I'm very excited for Refn/Washington's "Equalizer", a "Tinker" sequel and the return of McNaughton to the big screen (and with two of the best and most distinctive actors of their generation in tow!)

Just wondering: Did you think Nolte was William Hurt in "Big Chill"? Tom Berenger? Anyway, that's probably a Hallmark card of a movie, but Nolte and Close are still great actors.

I guess it's because you knew those other movies would be shit (maybe not Jonah Hex but still, it seemed more likely than this) but Alice seemed like it would be a match made in heaven. Burton, Depp, Hathaway, Bonham Carter, Wazickwieakdhbdiasdowska, Rickman, and how many other actors in fucking Alice in Wonderland! It looked fantastic visually, too, but good god was it bad. It wasn't a stupid premise (weak, but not stupid like most of the movies you listed), but there were so many bad decisions. Every new thing was a slap to the face.

The jabberwocky and bandersnatch existing and being big roles? *slap*
Alice having to fight the jabberwocky? *slap*
THAT GOD DAMN DANCING *slap*

Amongst so many other stupid decisions, the biggest was trying to make sense out of nonsense. Having a plot is one thing. Trying to make a POEM in the story be a living breathing villain is just... just...

I'll stop before I lose it

You're right I knew Sex in the city 2, Killers, Bounty Hunter, and Marmaduke would be shit. Jonah Hex wasn't screened for critics so I wasn't sure and The Last Airbender I did not expect it to be as horrid as it was. I agree with you on some of the points you made but, I think calling it the worst is over exaggerating a bit. To me, it wasn't as great as it could have been but, it's far from the worst and I only named a few. To me the worst was The Last Airbender.

Alice was nothing more than a visual film, the story was non-existent and dull. The acting was good from everyone but Alice, I hated Mia (can't spell her last name for the life of me) and really don't know how the film hit the billion mark.

The new Transformers really only has me interested based on the fact Marky Mark is the new face. I'll probably end up seeing the film, but please Bay... make me remember the first film with the fourth entry.

On a side note: I'm very impressed with the new Man of Steel trailer and Pacific Rims debut trailer. 2013's summer lineup keeps looking more and more appealing starting with Iron Man 3.

An Alice in Wonderland sequel? I don't know, that just doesn't sound like a good idea. I mean, Alice in Wonderland has already been adapted to death, so a sequel just seems pointless.

What would be cool is an animated adaption of the Jabberwocky poem. Granted, you'd need the right guy and the right tone to do it, but I would rather see that than a sequel to AiW.

I love how so many are bitching about Burton's Alice over biased, crap-ass reasons. Yes, it wasn't Burton's best, & it certainly isn't the greatest movie of the year (and anyone who thought it was one of the worst movie of any category in general has a SEVERE mental disorder), but it did things right on what it was trying to do. Unlike the wonderful animated Alice movie, Burton's Alice actually had a plot & storytelling (as rushed as it was). Anyways, looking forward to this sequel, but I'm still waiting for more news on the live action adaption of Mulan & the Tron sequel.

Top Story- I actually don't mind a sequel at all. The first one is a visual treat. I seemed to enjoyed it more that many people did.
FRESH
#1- I really enjoyed the first Tintin film. I'll be happy to take a second film and 4 years in a row of Peter Jackson.
#2-Eh, you can count me out for this. This is not really an interesting premise.
#3-I'm excited for this! Nicolas Winding Refn proved himself with Drive. There's nothing wrong with Denzel either.
#4. This caught be my surprise. I seem to remember this film not doing too great financially here in the States. But, I'll be interested in seeing the sequel.
#5.Kind of disappointing. I would love to see Waltz in the new Muppets movie.
#6-This sounds kind of interesting. Michael Shannon is a good underrated actor. But this is not high on my must-see list.
#7-Ughhhhhh. Will Ferrell I'll watch but Kevin Hart......I dont think so.
ROTTEN
#2. I wonder if this would be similar to The Bucket List but with alzheimer's.
#1. Well, Transformers are my guilty pleasures. I'm willing to give this film a shot since it has Mark Wahlberg in it.

I don't think Alice In Wonderland is as bad as its reputation. I found it merely okay. Trying give it a plot just didn't really work out. Alice in Wonderland thrived on being illogical, so giving it a story just dulled the characters. Unfortunately, when such an average film grosses 1 bil the hate is bound to come, especially when for a while it was eaily the weakest film to cross the bil mark (before Disney broke that record again with Stranger Tides). As for a sequel - bad idea. What are they going to do? They've already used a lot of material from Through the Looking Glass. This just screams cash grab. I really hope Burton doesn't decide to direct it. Not only are there so many other better options, but Burton has almost always done best when he's doing smaller more personnel films (Sweeney Todd, Corpse Bride, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, etc) rather than big budget spectacles (Mars Attacks, Planet of the Apes, Dark Shadows, etc). This also makes me hope that Lone Ranger delivers both critically and commercially so Disney will turn that into their next franchise instead, as that has a lot more potential for sequels.

Angry Birds also screams cash grab. I'm not sure how it got labeled fresh. It's obvious they're doing it because of how popular the game is rather than it having any story that would work well for a movie (though I must admit the thought of having Samuel Jackson, Nic Cage, Christian Bale, Gerald Butler and Russel Crowe all star as angry birds is appealing, though of course it's not going to happen).

Denzel Washington's involvement in anything automatically gets my interest and having Refn as director makes it even more interesting.

The Muppets was one of the pleasant surprises of 2011. Now that's something that deserves a sequel. Also, any actor cast in the Muppets manages to deliver a funny performance (even the cameo of Selena Gomez was funny) so I'm not too bothered by Ty Burrel replacing Christopher Waltz.

Will Ferrel is very hit and miss so I'll wait and see who's going to direct Get Hard before getting excited about it. Would love to see the gig go to Adam Mckay as all of his collaborations so far with Ferrel have delivered.

To be fair to Nicola Peltz, no one came out of Last Airbender looking good, so in a case like that I'd put the blame on the script and dialogue rather than the performances ("Do you have a spiritual place?" "Yes, we have a VERY spiritual place" I don't see how you could deliver such lines in a good way) On the other hand, this is Michael Bay directing a reboot of his own trilogy, so it's not like I'm looking forward to it in the first place anyway.

Dec 15 - 11:16 PM

I don't think Lone Ranger will be as good as Django Unchained, but I still think it has a lot of potential. Gore Verbinski is no Tarantino but he did direct POTC: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Rango. Yes, I know he also did Dead Man's Chest and At World's End, but to be fair to him, trying to direct two massive back to back films without having any source material to rely on is no easy feat. Also, personally I thought Dead Man's Chest was pretty good. I liked how it made fun of how confusing it was (though POTC3 went overboard with subplots introduced for the sake of subplots) and unlike so many other Disney big budget live action film (eg, Prince of Persia) it was funny while also having a horror edge to it that prevented from becoming too cheezy. I think it was simply a case of Iron Man 2 or Back to the Future Part 2 where the original was so unexpected, such a breath of fresh air that it was almost inevitable the sequel would be met with dissapointment. Compared to Disney's other billion dollar grossers it's way better than Alice in Wonderland and On Stranger Tides.

Anyway, back to Lone Ranger, yes it could end up being a collasal failure, but it's also the Disney film with the most potential to become another Pirates of the Caribbean and take everyone by surprise.

Alice in Wonder Land 2, meh. I remember relating to the main character because I to was bored the whole time during that film. I think maybe the direction for Mia was Act like Kirsten Stewart to which I say she did a fantastic Job.

Tin Tin was my favorite animated film of that year. Absolutely stunning. A visual roller coaster ride with an actual mystery and fun characters? Brilliant and well played Mr. Spielburg.

Angry Birds the movie is gonna have Peta up in Arms because those birds and pigs don't have arms to defend themselves!

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is Fantastic!

I'm gonna see a transformers film in theaters, and that's that. I know, I need help. Every 2 years I fall off the wagon. Michael Bay films are my Vice. So at least they have Marky Mark in there. He'll obviously be a side character while his daughter pines for a boy that's not good enough for her proves his worth (That he's more than meets the Eye..barf) by saving the day blah blah blah but still Mark Wahlberg is in some great action movies.
