Perhaps something important was spirited away with the 20 minutes of footage shorn for this U.S. release, but the combatants are scarcely distinguishable here even before disappearing under layers of mud and guts.
Not much a review here, and the lack of distinguishably proves that this isn't a critic who is used to seeing samurai films because to him all the characters look the same - as he clearly states - which also possible means that he probably wasn't paying attention, because the characters are clearly distinguishable as individuals, each with their own story, but its not like its going to go into extreme depth with all thirteen. Also considering the rest of this reviews by this critic it's hard to call him a Top Critic, or even a 'critic' at all. I really hope no one takes him, with this review at the very least, seriously.

Can always count on the Village for their negative opinions of anything that isn't artsy and yawn inducing.

Thanks Nick, maybe you should get another job because you don't appear to be able to comment on the subtle depths, social commentary, amazing sword work or anything that a reviewer of this movie should be talking about. All you took from it was that you can't tell one Japanese guy from another. (By the way did it occur to you that in the frenzy of battle it would be very difficult to recognise anyone and that's why soldiers where distinguishable uniforms?)You don't seem to have any joy in films, get another job or get some imagination, perception and humility.

I saw the deleted 18 mins and it doesn't add anything to the film -- which is absolutely outstanding in my opinion.

I saw this movie last night, so let's put your theory to the test. Well there was the main guy (Shinzaemon?) and his old friend (Karagama?). Then his nephew the gambler who wants to "find himself" or something. And the guy (Maybe Hiryama?) that has one student, a kid. Then there's the fat guy with the spear. The mountaineering hunter man. That leaves 6. So there's the two guys that seem to be in love with each other... Hioko or something and his buddy. 4 left. ummm Then maybe the rest were quiet guys killed off early? Apart from the 13 you have the main bad guy Lord Digitalcamera or whatever, and his main bodyguard, who happens to be an old respectful adversary of Shinzaemon. I can bring the faces of these characters, their personalities, and their fighting styles to mind about 12 hours after seeing the movie. Have you tried Ritalin?
