Box Office Guru Wrapup: The American Takes the Top Spot

Machete, Takers round out the top three.

This weekend, the summer movie season closed quietly as the top ten slumped to its worst performance of 2010 with audiences finding other ways to spend their Labor Day holiday weekend. Two of the three new releases -- George Clooney's assassin pic The American and Robert Rodriguez's violent revenge actioner Machete -- met with moderate bows while Drew Barrymore's romantic comedy Going the Distance failed to attract business. The top ten films tumbled to less than $75M (over the Friday-to-Sunday period) making for the lowest performance in nearly one year giving the marketplace very little momentum going into the fall season.

For the first time in his career, George Clooney anchored a number one hit movie all by himself as the Focus release The American shot to the top with an estimated $16.4M in ticket sales over the four-day Friday-to-Monday holiday frame. The R-rated drama averaged a decent $5,808 from 2,823 theaters over four days and has grossed $19.5M in the six days since its Wednesday launch. The Oscar-winning actor has reached the top spot numerous times but always when surrounded by other major stars like with the Ocean's series or The Perfect Storm. The Friday-to-Sunday gross for the modest $20M production was $13.1M for a $4,650 average.

With the box office filled with films catering to teens and young adults, The American scored by playing to a more mature crowd. Autumn releases typically skew older so the Italy-set film was the appropriate choice to end off summer and welcome in the fall. The last time the chart was topped by such a low gross was Labor Day 2009 and the last film to open at number one with a smaller gross was Bangkok Dangerous with $7.8M two years ago over the September 5-7 session.

After winning the box office race on Friday, Fox's Mexploitation actioner Machete finished in second place over the long four-day weekend with an estimated $14M. Robert Rodriguez's Danny Trejo-led action-comedy played in 2,670 sites and averaged a mediocre $5,243 per location over the long weekend. Over three days, the gross was $11.4M while the average was $4,279. The performance was almost identical to the $11.6M opening and $4,419 average of 2007's Grindhouse which featured a fake trailer for Machete which became the inspiration for the campy feature film.

Holding up relatively well in its second weekend, the crime thriller Takers dropped to third with an estimated $13.5M falling 47% from its top spot debut when comparing the three-day periods. Sony's PG-13 offering has taken in a better-than-expected $40M in its first 11 days of release and could be looking at a final take of around $60M.

Tumbling 64% from its impressive debut last weekend, the fright flick The Last Exorcism took fourth place with an estimated $8.8M in ticket sales. Lionsgate has scared up a solid $33.6M in 11 days and looks headed for a $42-45M finish.

Audiences showed no interest in Drew Barrymore's latest romantic comedy Going the Distance which opened poorly in fifth place with an estimated $8.6M over four days. The R-rated pic about a couple trying to make a long distance relationship work averaged a weak $2,842 from 3,030 theaters. Co-starring Justin Long, the Warner Bros. release enjoyed the most theaters of any new release over the past two weeks, but also suffered the worst debut. Reviews were generally negative and the strict rating kept out younger teens. The Friday-to-Sunday take was only $6.9M.

The rest of the top ten was filled with holdovers that moviegoers were busy catching up on after a long hot summer. All dropped by 30% or less when comparing Friday-to-Sunday sessions. Lionsgate's The Expendables grossed an estimated $8.5M, off 30%, raising the cume to $94.1M. Sony followed with its pair of late summer star-driven hits The Other Guys and Eat Pray Love which took in estimates of $6.7M and $6.3M, respectively. The Will Ferrell action-comedy dipped only 16% lifting the total to $108.1M while the Julia Roberts travel journal fell 30% and has banked $70.4M to date.

Summer's biggest non-sequel Inception eased by a scant 7% to an estimated $5.9M and has collected $278.4M thus far for Warner Bros. Rounding out the top ten was Universal's family comedy Nanny McPhee Returns Returns with an estimated $4.7M, down 26%, and a disappointing $23.5M overall.

With the season coming to an end, the following are the top ten blockbusters of Summer 2010: Toy Story 3 ($408.8M), Iron Man 2 ($312.1M), The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ($298.8M), Inception ($278.4M), Despicable Me ($241.3M), Shrek Forever After ($238.4M), The Karate Kid ($175.9M), Grown Ups ($159.4M), The Last Airbender ($131.1M), and Salt ($115.6M).

The top ten films grossed an estimated $93.2M over four days which was off 3% from the long Labor Day weekend last year when The Final Destination remained in the top spot with $15.3M; but up 9% from 2008's holiday which fell a week earlier when Tropic Thunder stayed at number one for the third week in a row with $14.6M.

It's good to see a movie for adult audiences take the No. 1 spot, even if during a weak week for movies.

Glad to see the low-budged American take #1. Clooney deserves it. Hope the only decent reviews don't scare audiences away in the weeks to come. Pretty predictable performance from Machete. Still surprised to see Takers doing so well. I thought it would bomb. Cheers to Inception and The Other Guys, two of the best films of the summer. So sad Scott Pilgrim still hasn't managed to sneak back into the top ten. I was convinced word of mouth would boost its total earnings to high marks despite its bad opening. Oh well, it's bound to be a classic in twenty years. Anyone who's seen it would agree. By the way, congrats to Toy Story, Iron Man, Inception, Despicable Me and The Karate Kid for making it into the summer's top 10. It surprises me that 5 of the summer's top 10 films were actually FRESH on the T-meter. I guess that means that audiences are actually starting to question whether they should take the time at money to see those trashy multi-million dollar money makers and are instead seeing the smarter, higher quality films. I hope this means something for future summers!

it really is great that most of them are fresh. i hope Hollywood will bring some more original blockbusters like Inception next year as well. though we already know that Thor is one of them :D!! and The Green Hornet, which looks good.

I think The American and Machete were both disappointing. They weren't bad, but not as good as I had hoped. That said, it's nice to see a Focus Feature at the top.

Not much going on in this week's box office numbers. I might check out The American, but from what I hear it is a boring film. Resident Evil: Afterlife may end up being bad, but since I've seen all three films I will watch this one coming out. Looks action packed even though the plot and acting might suck. Resident: Afterlife might be number 1 next weekend.

Definately. I don't care what other people say; I really like these films. And the addition that it was SHOT in 3D (yeah, M. Night) really attracts me.

I just caught Machete and thought it was pretty freaking awesome. You just gotta be in that target market that they are selling Machete for. Its got lots of gore, naked women, and cheese-infested dialogue. If you like that (like me) you'll really like this movie.

K

K on 09-6-2010 04:42 PM

If you're a fan of Rodriguez or any kind of grindhouse flick for that matter, then Machete is definitely for you. Otherwise like you said, those not in the target market probably won't like it.

I knew Machete was in trouble when my friends & I caught it opening night, & found it playing to a nearly two-thirds empty theater. I guess George Clooney is one of the only actors left with any discernible star power. Good for him. I'll take a stab at The American one night this week.

I was really disappointed in Machete. I thought it was too political for a grindhouse movie and too grindhouse for a political movie. Seagal and alba were just ridiculous to me and not in a good way.

can't believe Inception is still making money!! go Inception! also, very surprised that The American took top spot, seems to look a little boring to me anyway, very happy that Toy Story 3 was the highest grosser of the summer and that atleast some good movies were in the top, not including Last Airbender of course, which can die in a hole. :)

Glad to see a sub-par rom com didn't open in the top 3 for a change. Still, kind of a lackluster way to end the summer season. Bring on the Awards Season films!

Matthew M.

Matthew M. on 09-6-2010 07:27 PM

Ok, we've gotta organize and get Inception over Twilight's gross. It only needs 20.5 million dollars (give or take that Twilight earns no more money). Come on people we can do it. If it cost $12.50 to see it Imax, we can pull this off.

As for this up coming weekend Resident Evil will probably take the top spot. It's in 3D and actually looks pretty good. I mean who doesn't want to see an Army of Mila anyway?

Deanno

Deanno on 09-7-2010 01:43 PM

It might cost more in other regions unless you live in the Seattle area where it's playing in IMAX at a mall in Takwila.

And another summer movie season is in the books. Overall a good summer session, though it fell a bit short of my expectations, that may be though because I missed a few in theatres, but overall I enjoyed the summer movies that I saw, and there were plenty. It was great to see how many quality films were released, both original movies and sequels. Iron Man started it with a bang, and as usual it quietly goes away. All that said I'll say my top 6 favorites of the summer, in no particular order would go like this:
Toy Story 3
Twilight Saga: Eclipse
Despicable Me
Inception
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
Iron Man 2

Others I greatly enjoyed were Salt, Robin Hood, Get Him To The Greek, Sex and the City 2, and the Avatar Re-Release, the new footage was great and really added to the original cut, and the others I can't remember right now, I enjoyed many of the movies I did see, and of course my Summer indies shout out to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Secret In Their Eyes, Winter's Bone, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, Cyrus, and The Kids Are All Right, and others that slip my mind at the moment. Overall I enjoyed the movies released this summer, and I am ready to welcome the Fall and Awards season movies with open arms, many of the upcoming movies look great, the one I'm most anticipating is Black Swan. So long summer 2010, bring on Awards Season 2010!

Sucks for Machete; I really enjoyed the ludicrousness of it all, and it was as gloriously horrible as I hoped it would be (I cannot believe that is my praise for the movie). Thought it was a lot of fun, and eventhough it flopped at the box-office, I thought it was a great way to end the summer at the movies.

I'm skipping Machete. I'm not giving money to a pseudo-political film with naked women. Action films need less women in them, and less boobs. That's why The Expendables is so awesome.

Scott Pilgrim and The American come out here in the 23th or so. I will first catch Scott, and then The American.

The American had some nice moments but overall, it was a slow, plodding, dour vehicle featuring Clooney brooding in nearly every scene. I found some of the characters interesting, the acting was good overall, but it was definitely more about style than story. And the butterfly imagery was a bit pretentious.

Dave J. on 09-7-2010 11:20 AM

The American was a quality film. Not quite arthouse not quite mainstream. I am glad it took the one spot. Danny Trejo is not leadning man material and I applaud Rodriguez for his willlingness to go out of the mainstream but since he made spy kids and shorts. His pandering to the film industry hit an all time high. It is also to point out the utter failure that was to be a reboot of the Predator franchise. How can you epic fail that one. Good thing he has Sin City 2 comming out. I wish him well on that project.

i am really sad about the fact that Scott Pilgrim failed...like wow...that movie was easily one of the best movies this year, its not gonna win any OSCARs but it was a hell of an entertaining film with plenty of heart.
