Critics Consensus: On Stranger Tides is Out to Sea

Plus, Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris is a charmer.

This week at the movies, we've got the hotly-anticipated fourth journey of Capt. Jack Sparrow -- Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, starring Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz. What do the critics have to say?

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

33%

When Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl hit theaters in 2003, it was a delightful surprise -- Johnny Depp charmed nearly everyone with his Keith Richards-meets-Buster Keaton performance as the lovable, roguish Capt. Jack Sparrow, and the whole enterprise was much smarter -- and more exciting - than any movie based upon an amusement park ride had a right to be. What was once fresh, however, has now become pretty stale; critics say the third Pirates sequel, On Stranger Tides, has moments of inspiration, but mostly it just feels mechanical, overdosing on big effects without generating much excitement in the process. This time out, Sparrow is in search of the mythical Fountain of Youth. He commandeers the ship of the legendary Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and joins forces with the mysterious, possibly villainous Angelica (Penťlope Cruz). The pundits say that while On Stranger Tides is well-acted and shows flashes of the vaudevillian swashbuckling that made the franchise a pop-culture staple, it mostly does exactly what you expect, but without the brisk pacing and panache of yore. (Check out this week's Total Recall, in which we count down producer Jerry Bruckheimer's best-reviewed movies.)

Also opening this week in limited release:

  • Louder Than A Bomb, a documentary about a group of high school students competing in a poetry slam competition, is at 100 percent.
  • Life 2.0, a doc about the strange lives of Second Life players, is at 100 percent.
  • Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, starring Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams in a comedy/fantasy about a writer who finds himself transported to Jazz Age Paris, is at 87 percent.
  • Cost of a Soul, a drama about an Iraq war vet who returns home to a dangerous neighborhood, is at 33 percent.

Yeah, no surprise at all! 2011 is a year where suck-ish sequels are released or will be released. Can't wait for Transformers 3!!! Megan Fox will be awesome and Bay will finally be a member of DGA (or he's a member already? Dang!)!!! *lots of exclamation point!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The last one sucked?... the FIRST one sucked. The whole 'franchise' is a pathetic, formulistic, just-make-the-effects-cool ruination of a cartoon series that I loved as a kid. As for 'Pirates...', I only acknowledge the first one--same as with 'The Matrix'. 'More is better' is a real Achilles heel in human nature, LOL.

Good one, Not L.! I laughed out loud when I read your "Wow.. just.. wow!" and then I kept on laughing. :)

I've learned to just laugh at the "First!" people. It used to really get me angry... too angry. And, so, for my sake I just started to both pity them and laugh at them. It's really sad that they find some sort of satisfaction or accomplishment out of being "First!"

How sad that they don't know they lose no matter what. Even if they are actually "first," it doesn't mean anything. It signifies nothing, and they look like losers for even playing that game. And then, if they post "First!" and are not first, they look like losers, like big failures. There's no WIN in it.

These people really need a hobby. Maybe pick up a sport, or drawing, or singing, something. I'd be even more likely to smile if they said they got the highest amount of points or money on some videogame.

But, anyway, thanks for the big laugh! You were the "First!" person to make me laugh that hard today. :D

Not shocked at all. Don't care at all. The first was terrific. The second was okay. The third was terrible. So I had no hope for it. I never thought it would work without Will and Elizabeth. Good comparison, though I think Han would disagree! If you want a possible outing with Mr. Depp, try waiting for "the Rum Diary"...supposedly to be released (we've heard this a few times) in October. Hunter S. Thompson's book, on which it's based, is fantastic (and hilarious), so Depp should do it as much justice as he did "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".

I'm so not surprised about Pirates 4's score - I mean, let's be honest: the first movie was very entertaining, light hearted and just fun to watch, the sequel was pretty bad - not awful, but it lost nearly all of the original's magic and whimsy, becoming an overly-convoluted, CGI-heavy mess. The third part was mind-numbingly awful - one of the noisiest, most ridiculous movies this side of Matrix 3, so it's only logical that the 4th would follow the trend of dwindling returns... I don't even have any desire to watch this on BD, never mind paying for it in cinemas.

Not surprised that this movie is getting such bad reviews in the least, it looks completely AWFUL. I didn't even really like the first movie, the crazy with these movies always confused me. I remember standing outside the theater for either the 2nd or 3rd one, only there because my friends wanted to go, and thinking "Why am I here." This and the Harry Potter movies I will never understand the obsession with. Liking either of them, sure, but there are so MANY better movies/books/even TV shows that you could be obsessed with. Sorry, I meant the "craze" about the movies, I didn't mean to imply that anyone is insane because they like the movies, I even corrected that typo in a response. Again, there's nothing wrong with liking something that's generally popular, but when I see friends post on facebook, "OMG NEW HP7 PART 2 TRAILER OMFG IT'S SO GOOD I'M LITERALLY JIZZING IN MY PANTS RIGHT NOW," it just confuses me. Again to clarify: Genuinely liking HP movies is fine, they've actually gotten generally better the more sequels have been produced, which is more than you can say for most series that go on and on. But the utter obsession with a mediocre to good product is truly scary. For example, what do you like so much about the Harry Potter movies? Just that they're visual interpretations of books that were a part of your childhood, I'm assuming? To clarify further: I actually liked recent Harry Potter movies, but I didn't feel the need to get a midnight pass to see them. For example, why didn't people get as excited about Source Code, arguably the best widely-available Hollywood blockbuster of 2011? It was much better than any HP film, but people don't go apeshit over it in the same way. I also realize there's difference of opinion and I'm not trying to knock people who like HP, but it seems like EVERYONE was super pumped when HP7 Part 1 came out? Why is that?
