Countdown: Best Sequels 2012

Let's be honest: sequels have gotten a bad rap. For every attempt to wring more cash out of an established, brand-name movie, there's another that deepens and expands upon the cinematic world that preceded it. With that in mind, we at Rotten Tomatoes have compiled our Best Sequels list, a comprehensive countdown of the best-reviewed follow-ups and continuations in movie history!

Before digging in, let us establish some ground rules. We've used a weighted formula that takes the Tomatometer, the number of reviews, and the year of release into account. In addition, a film needs at least 20 reviews to qualify. We've also excluded spinoffs and prequels. Anyway, check out our list, which contains enough classics that you'll learn to stop worrying and love the sequel.

Jeez, Max. Do you not understand how these lists work? Arguing over what was ranked where is a natural and welcome by-product. If people didn't have some back-and-forth about them, then they are kind of pointless. Lighten up a bit.

Actually arguing over things are not how lists work, listing things are how lists work, everybody demanding that their opinion be right is something completely different and my original comment WAS a joek so I don't really know why I should "lighten up"

It's funny -- RT users are honestly MUCH more reasonabl3 the dummies who are commenting via Facebook comments, if anyone else saw those.

That's the way it works.... But at least the RT comments are not nearly as idiotic as the Facebook comments.. I looked at them before I switched over here and man half the people commenting over there must have the brain power of a hamster... I feel safer over here with my RT brethren.

Was "In the Mood for Love" a sequel? I know that "2047" is the sequel to that, but what was the first one a sequel to? Also, I'm not sure if you can call Kieslowski's Three Colors films sequels. They interconnect, but they're not a linear narrative. "Superman II", "Wrath of Khan" and "Shot in the Dark" are all way too low. I know the ultimate ratings are arbitrary, but, look in your hearts, and you know that "Road Warrior" and "Aliens" are the correct winners. (By the way, there are some phantom reviews afoot. "Godfather 2" and "Empire" are listed with 2 and 3 rotten respectively, but only 1 and 2 are actually listed. And can we just agree to ignore that old vampire Vincent Camby at this point? Must we remain haunted by that old bitch's bones? Also, I think "Good Bad and the Ugly" should get an honorary 100% simply because the cowards at TIME and Variety couldn't even muster the spine to put their names on their reviews.)

This is pretty much spot-on. Toy Story 2 may be rated higher and therefore is necessarily listed as #1, but I think you would find few people who would legitimately rate it as a superior film to the likes of Godfather II or Good, Bad, Ugly.

Checked "Mood for Love", and it is considered the second part of a trilogy, with the first being a Wong Kar Wai I haven't seen yet, "Days of Being Wild". Oh, and I missed that room number by one door. The confusion is amusing if you've seen the movie ;)

They're loose with their "sequel" definition. For Good Bad Ugly, Leone's trilogy of movies are not related by character nor plot - only by crew. Also Evil Dead 2 is more a remake than a sequel.

I thought that Toy Story 2 was the worst of the three, i don't think it deserves to be number one when you have much greater films on the list like Godfather pt 2 and the dark knight.

Before Sunset's probably my personal favorite, but I'm perfectly content with Toy Story 2 being #1. I love that movie. Of course the Godfather Part II is great too.

Where is Batman Returns? It is better then The Dark Knight Rises. Also some movies should be higher on the list: Indiana Jones and T2 not in top 15? Toy Story 2 and 3 in top five? I know that Pixar is good, but Godfather 2, T2, Aliens and The Dark Knight are better sequels then Toy Stories!!!

I love the Toy Story trilogy as much as the next person, but I found Toy Story 2 to be the weakest of the three. My favorite sequel (and film in general) is The Godfather Part II. If you want to talk about something nearly perfect, it's The Godfather Part II, without a doubt. Anyways, this list has some amazing sequels and unforgettables masterpieces, even if the order isn't the way I'd put them, but this RT's opinion and not mines, obviously.

My Top-10 Sequels:
1-The Godfather Part II
2-Star Wars-Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
3-The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
4-The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
5-The Dark Knight Rises
6-The Dark Knight
7-Aliens
8-Toy Story 3
9-Terminator 2: Judgement Day
10-Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II

Jaws: The Revenge is the worst of the series. Nightmare on Elm Street 2. Predator 2. (Probably Alien Vs Peradtor 2, I didn't finish it) Rocky 5. Terminator 3 (I stand by this) Smokey and the Bandit 3. Trail of the Pink Panther. Exorcist II (like Halloween III, there's recent efforts to redeem this in hindsight; they're wrong). Hellraiser - anything after the third one (which wasn't all that great either). KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULLS. Star Trek 5: The Search for God. Prequels. You know what I'm talking about. King Kong Lives. Die Another Day. X-Men Last Stand. Blade 3. Beverly Hills Cop 3. Species II.

Exorcist II for sure.

Star Trek V is horrible.

Elm St. II is the worst of the series.

Nice to see the "Three Colors" films on here. "Lord of the Rings" is my all-time favorite film, but I consider it one film in three parts (same with "Bourne"). That being said, my personal favorite sequels are (in no order):

- "Toy Story 2" (A masterful sequel to a masterful film)
- "Toy Story 3" (A wonderful conclusion to one of the greatest trilogies in history)
- "Aliens" (The only film in the franchise that gave the characters a heart)
- "Home Alone 2" (A gigantic guilty pleasure, but I still love it)
- "Hellboy II" (An incredibly imaginative film)
- "Terminator 2" (Simply one of the greatest sequels ever made)
- "Spiderman 2" (Completely tops the original)
- "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (Just as good as "Raiders," and incredibly funny)
- "The Dark Knight" (A very flawed but very good good film)
- "The Rescuers Down Under" (Criminally underrated)
- "Hot Shots! Part Deux" (The best spoof ever made)
- "The Matrix Reloaded" (People are way too hard on it)
- "Mission: Impossible 3" (The most emotionally involving of the series)
- "Lethal Weapon 2" (One of the most underrated sequels ever)
- "An American Tail: Fievel Goes West" (Remains a great childhood time capsule)
- "Shrek 2" (The best and funniest of the series)
- "Drunken Master II" (The greatest fight scenes ever put on film)

My point: Sequels do get a bad rap. But there are some great ones out there.

This happens with Every Single Damn List. It's not hard to understand: the list is based on both the percentage of positive reviews as well as the average grade. Thus a movie with 100 % reviews but an average of 8.3 (Mad Max) will not be rated as highly as a movie with 93% but a higher average rating (Dark Knight). The ONLY arbitrary factor is which movies are considered sequels.

I wouldn't consider any of the LOTR or Harry Potter films sequels. They're part of one, big continuing story--planned that way from the beginning. Two Towers and Return of the King are absolutely, 100% necessary to form a complete story. Bride of Frankenstein and T2 are sequels, because in the case of each, their predecessors can stand alone as one, completed story. Bride and T2 are wonderful and indispensible, yes, but not essential to our understanding of the films they follow. That said, of course I have problems with this list, but who cares? I won't complain. My vote for best sequel goes to Bride of Frankenstein.

I love all the Karloff Frankenstein movies. "Bride" might be best, but if you haven't seen it, check out "Son of Frankenstein", which was the film that was most of the jokes in "Young Frankenstein" were based on. Still, great atmosphere.

Hmm. I seem to remember watching "Son" at some point during my childhood. I'll have to see it again, though. My favorite will always be Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein.

Wow! You have a great taste and make great points. Have you seen "The Godfather, Part II", I would easily put it as my favorite sequel (and film), because of it's grandiosity-fulfilled ambition.
