I'm confused. If GRAVITY is nominated for Best Movie and Best Actress in an Action Movie, why isn't it nominated for Best Action Movie too? And if THE WOLF OF WALL STREET is nominated for Best Movie and Best Actor in a Comedy, why isn't it nominated for Best Comedy too?

I think the "Best Movie" nomination supersedes the other sub-categories...?

If so, then why is American Hustle nominated for Best Comedy?

Cause its nominated in the sci fi/horror category...not action.

But the point is that it's considered an action movie by the voters, and that's why Bullock was nominated. So shouldn't it be nominated as that AND as sci-fi (like LOOPER last year)?

And may I point out that Gravity is NOT by any means sci-fi, not at all.

These nominations below are always a clusterf***:

BEST ACTION MOVIE
BEST ACTOR IN AN ACTION MOVIE
BEST ACTRESS IN AN ACTION MOVIE
BEST COMEDY
BEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY
BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
BEST SCI-FI/HORROR MOVIE

Why do you think that? And why do you say "always"? Most of those categories were introduced last year.

I assume that these extra categories were set up to give some spotlight to films that normally wouldn't be award-worthy, but when you have films like Gravity and American Hustle in serious consideration, it's going to bleed over. I don't care for any of the nominees anyway, as long as crap like World War Z and Iron Man 3 (RDJ as best actor for yet another patented petulent spoiled brat performance - please.) soil the entries.

I hope so. You don't need to be a 14-year-old girl to know that his performances in The Aviator, Catch Me if You Can, Blue Diamond, J. Edgar and Inception have all been award-worthy but were all in some way overlooked. Now that his excellent performance in Great Gatsby is being overlooked by his own performance in The Wolf of Wall Street, his long-awaited Academy Award is long overdue.

I guarantee that if he hadn't done Wolf of Wall Street, he would have been nominated for Great Gatsby. Therefore, not only should he win for his (presumably) outstanding performance in The Wolf of Wall Street, but he should win because he has two award-worthy performances under his belt this year alone.

It's true, he has been great for a while; but with so much best actor talent (Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tom Hanks, McConaughey,Oscar Isaac all were amazing and I heard Bale and Redford were great too) this year, I don't know if it's the right year for a sort of cumulative award.

The category I'm most curious about the most is probably the movies on for the "Best Foreign Language Films" category since some looked quite obscure!

Another question: If Jennifer Lawrence is already nominated for Best Supp. Actress for AMERICAN HUSTLE, why isn't she also nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy? They nominated Amy Adams instead. Is she the lead?

Dec 16 - 02:16 PM

Amy Adams is the lead, but then why are Sam Rockwell and James Gandolfini nominated for their films? They both play supporting roles.

Those categories don't separate between lead and supporting. And since they're for specific genres, then it gives the actors more opportunities to be nominated.

if Tye Sheridan does not win best young actor/actress for his work in Mud, then there is no point in these "awards"....his performance is better than most of the adult actors listed here.

I'm just so confused. I'ts her voice?and I've heard it in the previews. It's an average "i am a robot" performance. Iunno, it seems like a stunt nomination. Maybe it's because I listen to a lot of voice acting and Scar Jo on Robot chicken as the GPS sounds like Scar Jo in the preview as Her.

The Oz score probably would be excluded anyway for its accidental O Canada quotation for one of its themes. On the subject of score nominees, I personally wish Zimmer's personality-free score for 12 Years a Slave was replaced by The Book Thief's score. At least that one felt like it was telling a story out of context like the other nominees, even without the bias of John William's name attached.
