Adam (Richard E. Grant) is a rich industrialist, who aspires to a more cultured world. Spurred on by playful jibes that he is little more than a city suit living the capitalist's dream, this frustrated amateur opera singer decides to throw an opera in his lavish country retreat. A pallid gloss of a work that teems with deception, disguise and mistaken identity, not to mention humor.
The movie may appeal to theater aficionados and Juilliard undergrads, but to the average moviegoer, it's a trudge.
It's hard to explain why every character in 1st Night behaves like an adolescent in a sitcom.
The music of Mozart seems too big for the "book" of this minor-key romantic roundelay, which nevertheless manages to be increasingly, albeit mildly, engaging.

There are two things in this film's favour: Mozart on the soundtrack and the location, within the grounds of a splendid country house.
The whole thing descends into oo-er bedroom farce when life begins to mimic the antics of Mozart's opera.
Bring out the fat lady and let's be done with this.
Like Dorian Gray with opera, Big Brother with class, The Apprentice with singers or The X Factor with sex, this is a surprisingly heady treat...
