12 Facts About 2012

Summary

Did the Mayans really predict, all those centuries ago, that Earth would be visited by planetary apocalypse three years from now? It's open to interpretation -- Roland Emmerich has a gargantuan disaster movie to sell and even he admits the whole 2012 theory is just, "a nice hook for the audience." John Cusack, Thandie Newton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Woody Harrelson and Danny Glover are a few of the stars swept up in Emmerich's latest cataclysmic shocker. Rotten Tomatoes meets the cast and director in Cancun, Mexico - close to the once-throbbing heart of Mayan civilisation -- for a 2012 fact-finding mission. Back to Article

Why would anyone want to see this? Did anyone see the trailer? It looks awful. Maybe so-bad-it's-good awful. But, maybe not.

vashfanatic - we absolutely didn't insist that the Mayans predicted the end of the world in this piece. We don't do that in the intro and we don't do it in the quote you'd picked out. If anything I'd argue the piece goes to lengths to dispute the notion that there was an apocalyptic prediction within the calendar, whether or not it goes into academic detail about the circumstances surrounding the movie's concept.

Um, yes you do. You say believing the "prediction," as well as its details, is up in the air, but that the calendar really does indisputably end in 2012, which it does not. Unless you change the quote I offered, you are still spreading the misinformation.

Per your information I've changed the line to read, "but their sophisticated 'Long Count' calendar does comes to the end of a cycle on December 21, 2012." Inasmuch as this is a piece about a Hollywood movie, I think that's as much detail as we can reasonably go into.

Decisively, no, the Mayans didn't predict the end of the world in 2012. It's all psuedo-science and new age mysticism that perpetuates that notion.

Even if the Mayans did predict the end of the world, why would anyone trust something so old, from a race that essentially no longer exists? Their world effectively ended a long time ago.

2012, Armageddon, Deep Impact, Daylights, The Day After Tomorrow, maybe even Twister, I wonder how many more movies like this are we gonna get!!! Until one of them is not going to make any money!!! This one could do well if this new generation didn't see these other disaster flicks.

Fact: Another 'disaster' movie has already been in theatres this year.

Fact: Said movie was a huge box office success.

Fact: Said movie was also critical bomb and had no redeeming qualities about it whatsoever.

Fact: This shows Americans are bloody stupid and pay to see **** being blown up and destroyed while lesser known, quality movies flounder.

Huh.... that's weird. Last time I checked, 52% of Transformers 2's gross came from OUTSIDE of the U.S.

Americans aren't the only people who eat this **** up.

Stupidity is global, sir. Please don't generalize Americans as all a bunch of lazy Transformers 2 loving football/baseball fanatics. That's like me saying all british are annoying "high class" humor loving goody two shoes with horrible teeth who kill each other over soccer. Its just not true for everybody.

Hey, Eric B. How about you get off your low-end ****-horse. I'm sorry that most people like movies that are actually GOOD. And if the entertainment business was full of "dickheads like him" we'd ONLY SEE GOOD MOVIES.

Oh, and hey, DOUGKIP, how about you stop generalizing Americans with your "Facts." I live in the US and I have not talked to one person who isn't generally disgusted that this crap actually got greenlit. Just because Hollywood is located in the US DOES NOT mean that every single American wanted this movie to get made. Just realize that next time you post, friend.

Hey Harvey, maybe when American box office numbers don't show that flocks of people went to see such sh*t I wouldn't generalize Americans.

The problem with the box office numbers for **** movies like this is that most of the morons who go to see them are teenagers who don't want to stay in on a friday night. Believe me, I wish movies like this didn't sell one ticket, but the fact is that *******s DO see these movies, and not just in the States, either. Sure, Day After Tomorrow grossed $180,000,000 in the States, but then there's $350,000,000 from outside the States, as well. It's not just Americans that see these crap movies.

Oh, Dougkip, stupid American movies released internationally often do as well if not better in other countries. Perhaps even (*gasp*) yours!

Let's see what we've learned from this article (that could have been written by a trained monkey, a couple box turtles and, uh...I dunno, a piece of lint, I guess:

1) Emmerich didn't wanna makes this thing.
2) The Mayan calendar comes to an end in 2012, but not really.
3) Danny Glover tripped and fell on a shaking stage.
4) Cusack TOTALLY LIKE ZOMG! wanted to be the lead in this.
5) He didn't wanna kill NY or Mecca but went after LA and Christians. (I personally don't care, I just don't get the logic.)
6) He didn't wanna film this crap in 3-D. (Hey! A GOOD thing!!!)
7) They filmed in front of a blue screen and it was cool, man.
8) They filmed in front of a blue screen and it sucked, man.
9) Thandie Newton got soaking wet. Not in a good way.
10) Nothing gets resolved at the end. Way to blow your ending.
11) They imitate the stupid Governor, who wants a private screening for some reason so he can view this crap in the comfort of his own home.
12) Emmerich tries to make **** touching...like he's never, EVER attempted that before.

*Eye roll*

Seriously, I cannot wait for this dumb movie to be in the theater and GONE.

Say what you will about Transformers. At least it knew it was a giant fighting robot movie and didn't go for anything remotely believable or serious.

I hate to say it, but I really want to see this. Emmerich hasn't made a decent film since the Patriot, but this actually looks pretty damn fun.
