Critics Consensus: 2012 Isn't Quite Earth-Shaking

Summary

This week at the movies, we've got a global catastrophe (2012, starring John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor) and some rock 'n' roll rebellion (Pirate Radio, starring Philip S. Hoffman and Bill Nighy). What do the critics have to say? Nobody goes to a Roland Emmerich picture expecting art or realism; they go for sheer spectacle. On that level, critics say, 2012 largely delivers. However, they also note that if you enjoy character development, witty dialogue, remotely plausible science, and brevity, you're out of luck. It's an understatement to say that the mid-to-late-1960s was a revolutionary period for British rock music, and Pirate Radio is a fond, celebratory comedy about those heady times. Critics say it may not rock quite hard enough, but it's got enough infectious good humor -- and hummable tunes -- to drown out objections. Back to Article

anyone could tell 2012 would "junk-out" with critics . . . the subject of the world ending has been done too recently and by the same director.

Its like Eddie Murphy shooting Beverly Hills Cop 4 for $70,000,000 and doing Beverly Hills Cop 5 two years later for $100,000,000.

its the same movie but more expensive.

@ james T. Actually the science behind 2012 is more than plausible .

Do you think you could do any better ?

Kami no shi, I'm not saying all of the facts are wrong, but we all know that Hollywood will throw in extra crap to stir people up and get them to believe in something that will probably not happen. One way to look at the Mayan calendar is when it stops, it could mean a new beggining is coming and not a world wide disaster.

I'll pass on '2012'- you can only watch the world being blown up so many times before it get's boring. There needs to be some underlying substance or else interest is lost instantly. 'Knowing' may have been ludicrous, but at least more was going on than just explosions and destruction. I thought 'Day After Tomorrow' was relatively decent, but nothing special. 'Godzilla' was an absolute cinematic abortion. I would love to see 'Mr. Fox' this weekend.

2012 looks good for sheer CGI madness but little else. Oh yeah and as I live in Britain, I've seen Fantastic Mr Fox and believe me it's definitely worth going to see, it's truly fantastic.

Critics don't review film so people can be told what to see. They review films for one reason.

To be entertained by their reviews. They're great to read or listen to. (depending on the critic.)

If you can't have your opinion challenged by them, then don't see what critics have to say.

Gosh David b, it's not at all possible that Messenger got an 87 because it's a well-acted, well-told story, is it? Why, such a thing is inconceivable.

And for your information, soldiers, firemen, and police are heroes for the most part. You can certainly still "think for yourself" without ****ting on the people who protect you.

I would love to hear some exaples of this "propaganda" that you speak of.

I higly doubt that the Messenger is propaganda. Mainly becasue this movie does not display the war in a positive light. I mean that would be contradictory to the definition of propaganda if the thing being promoted is displayed in a negative light. Also Woody Harrelson is not too shy about telling people he is against the war, doubt he would star in a movie that promotes it.

I agree with your take on seeing movies not because they score above a 70 on the tomato meter, but because they look good.

who would've thought Roland Emmerich's last movie would be '2012'?
he is getting pretty old in his age
the visuals in each of his installments rock despite his intelligence being somewhat ludicrous when it comes to plot and coherence in the story
but hey he's like Michael Bay, he loves blowing sh*t up

I still wonder though where he went wrong with 'Godzilla' and '10,000 B.C.'

Saw 2012 at a midnight showing. If you care about visual effects at all, you have to see it on the big screen. The CG is unprecedented--as big a step as ID4 was. Other than that it's a ridiculous movie--people making small talk as the world self destructs.
