A sprawling, visceral tribute to the legendary Manchester music scene that flourished between the years of 1976 and 1992, 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE recreates that influential era with reckless exuberance. In order to bring structure to the tale, Winterbottom and screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce focus their attentions on Tony Wilson (Steve Coogan), the man who was responsible for making it all happen. A television reporter by day, Wilson also led a notorious double life as band manager (Joy Division, the Happy Mondays, James), label president (Factory Records), and club owner (The Hacienda). Fiercely determined and dangerously stubborn, Wilson's energy gave an entire subculture of Manchester youths their place in the spotlight, forever changing the face of popular music in the process. Shot by acclaimed cinematographer Robby Muller in faded digital video, Winterbottom's pulsating film tears through its subject matter like an ecstasy induced history lesson. The performances are flawless from top to bottom, most notably Coogan, Sean Harris, Paddy Considine, John Simm, and Danny Cunningham. A must-see for music aficionados, Winterbottom's film is also worth viewing for its sheer sense of hyperkinetic entertainment. [More]

Reviews for 24 Hour Party People
Michael Winterbottom puts the Manchester, England music/club scene circa 1980 under the microscope... and forgets to take the lens cap off!
Not flawless by any stretch, 24 Hour Party People has an ear to the spirit of a time pitch-perfect and infectious.
Coogan is definitely funny, but even he can't inject the needed energy into this tired film.
Michael Winterbottom's deliriously wacked mockumentary is a Pythonesque tour through the evolution of a music scene.
Laced with brilliantly funny non-sequiturs and cameo appearances, and suffused with a pure love of the setting and real music which did indeed exist before all the corporations took over.
Winterbottom has set a high, new standard with 24 Hour Party People, his funny, riveting look at the music scene that ruled Manchester, England, from 1976 to 1992.
An uneven, hit or miss affair that never quite hits full Python stride and will probably only be appreciated by fans of one or both such music scenes.
Winterbottom, who rarely makes comedies ... nevertheless appreciates Coogan's richly comic portrait and lets him run with it.
The manic swirl of characters (most speaking in thick Northern accents that are sometimes muffled and incomprehensible) may leave you exhausted and confused.
Smart and grabby enough to work even if you think 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' is a bummer of a fortune cookie rather than a Joy Division tune.
Although you don't really get to know most of the players, 24 Hour does make you feel like you could have been up all night partying and puking with them.
A must see for fans of alternative, goth, or punk. It's a great story that's told in a unique and entertaining way.
Winterbottom grafts fact and fiction (for comedic and artistic license) to good effect.
Amazing, rich in authentic period atmosphere and detail, an ever-changing cyclorama of a movie that contains and frames Wilson, who never is allowed to overwhelm it.
It's not so much the sound of 'Madchester' captured on film as it is the spirit -- how a place so gloomy could wind up the center of rave culture, how the dreary finally got up and danced.
The actors' performances are a mix of eerie mimicry and something more: a portrait of ambitious dreamers kicking around big notions and doing absolutely self-destructive, stupid things.
