Critics Consensus: 2 Guns Shoots Wildly, But Its Stars Connect

Summary

This week at the movies, we've got heavily-armed undercover agents (2 Guns, starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg) and hijinks-prone blue creatures (The Smurfs 2 with voice work from Neil Patrick Harris and Katy Perry). What do the critics have to say? Back to Article

Well, no cinema for me this week. 2 Guns looks like it could be enjoyable, but I'm not about to waste money on something like that. The Smurfs 2 needs no explanation. As per usual, I won't get the rest until they get a wide release (And that's optimistic).

Aww, poor oppressed white people! Nothing is more funny than seeing a whiny member of the straight, white, male Christian majority cry about their rights after years and years of trampling over the rights of others.

Actually, you're incorrect that 'race' has anything to do with Elysium which it's theme was supposed to be between the wealthy elite and the impoverished! But, the way you're sounding off like that, you must be one of the few who didn't like "District 9" in which the aliens were segregated away from the human population!

I've had to sit through the trailer for "Smurfs 2" about 4 times now at the theater, and aside from the cab crushing Gargamel I haven't even cracked a fraction of a smile, so I'm glad to see critics are trashing it.

"2 Guns" will probably be a good rental when it hits DVD.

Wow, is "Top Crap: The Movie" so bad they forgot to mention it in the limited releases? Or is it even being released at all? I've never watched the original cartoon, but just like "Smurfs" the trailer didn't get so much as a smirk from me.

The cartoon, as with most Hanna-Barbera products, is classic, and absolutely hysterical. Where I am, the movie came out early last year (I guess 'cause it's just a dub of a cheap Spanish film), and tanked. Agree with you on 2 Guns, by the way.

Yet another Green Splotch week for wide releases. What was that Hollywood Reporter article this week warning about all of these quality adult films coming over the next two months? Blaming it on "Argo"? The studios and audiences are locked in a co-dependance of mediocrity. "Maybe he won't beat me this weekend..."

"2 Guns" actually looks better than I expected, but still not better than Redbox. "Smurfs 2" is just a cruel joke. Even John Oliver and Hank Azaria were making fun of it recently, and they're in it. Like "Grown Ups 2" it'll probably win the BO this week. "He only beats me because he loves me...."

Meanwhile, among those of us emotionally stable enough to enjoy respectful libertine promiscuity, "Europa Report" looks pretty damned good. "Spectacular Now" got a lot worse reviews at Sundance, but I'm glad it's gotten more promising, and I'm an unabashed Mary Elizabeth Winstead fan anyway. I want to see "Artist and the Model", because it's the director of "Belle Epoque" and the writer of longtime Luis Bunuel and Milos Forman collaborator Jean-Claude Carriere, with old pros Rochefort and Cardinale and the lovely young Aida Folch. The comedy doc looks great too, especially after enjoying the old-school Mel Brooks AFI tribute last week.

I'm a little surprised "Canyons" didn't go wide this week, with all that free publicity of Lohan getting out of rehab, and with Hollywood not having the highest opinion of America's admittedly masochistic tendencies. (Maybe we just don't love Hollywood enough.....)

You couldn't really expect Hollywood to learn anything from one little Best Picture winner, could you? Also, I have to point out that you're writing is just so gloriously snarky, it makes me hate mine even more.

2 Guns looks fun, but I'll wait for DVD and forget about Smurfs 2's existence. With the release of Elysium and Kick Ass 2 in the next few weeks though, it may be a fitting end to a good summer.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but SMURFS PART 2 looks like a better pick. I mean, I think it'll be as terrible as the 1st one, but 2 GUNS just looks generic and boring. With SMURFS at least I have an idea of what I'll watch and how to prepare.

I haven't liked a lot of the recent coming-of-age films, despite their good reviews, because they all feel like they're way too similar. So I think I'll pass on THE SPECTACULAR NOW.

The chemistry for 2 Guns looks great. Probably worth renting.

Smurfs 2 makes me wondering just how desperate the film industry is getting.

According to boxofficemojo It's actually performing better than Woverine as of right now! It made 5 million on Wednesday, and made almost 5 million on Thursday which means that it's has more chances to be #1 at the box office next week!

Actually that's a pretty underwhelming total so far for the Smurfs 2. It looks like its going to make 30 mil over the first five days which is less than what the first film made in its first 3 days. It's only beating Wolverine because that film is in its second weekend.

Doesn't really matter though. Smurfs 2 was greenlit based on its potential performance overseas, where so far its making a killing (so much for all the "United States is dumber than the rest of the world" rants that happened after Pacific Rim dissapointed domestically).

The Spectacular Now is the most interesting film out of all of these releases. Hopefully it can break out of limited release and go wide. Seems like Shailene Woodley is following in Jennifer Lawrence's footsteps by staring in a potential blockbuster teen-targetted franchise and then balancing that out with critically acclaimed dramas.

2 Guns looks like more average fare from Denzel Washington, so I'm not really in a hurry to see it. Maybe when it comes out on DVD/Blu-Ray or heck debuts on TV for free I'll check it out.

Never saw the first Smurfs, am not particularly fond of the cartoon series, so I have no interest at all in seeing The Smurfs 2.
