Weekly Ketchup: 300's Zack Snyder to direct Superman
This week saw Hollywood announcing projects in overtime, with many movies not making the top 10 cut of the Ketchup that would have easily done so in other weeks. So, I snuck some of those in with other stories, so you're really getting a top 15. Included in the mix are news stories for the Spider-Man and Superman reboot projects, movie musicals based on both the Beach Boys and Jersey Boys, and possible new roles for Sandra Bullock, Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Jodie Foster, Tom Hanks and Mike Myers.

Weekly Ketchup: Zack Snyder Pursues 300 Prequel Xerxes
This is the week of San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), so you're getting two helpings of the Weekly Ketchup. This first segment was written on Thursday morning (just as the Comic Con is starting its first full day), and the second helping will be posted after the weekend is over, to cover all of the additional news that comes out. Included in this batch is a new movie for director Sam Raimi, new roles for Brad Pitt and Mark Wahlberg, news about the 300 sequel and an adaptation of one of the 1990s' most award-winning comic books. Note: not all news covered in either segment of this Week's Ketchup is necessarily related to San Diego Comic-Con.

RT on DVD: WALL-E And An Exclusive Tropic Thunder Deleted Scene!

Zack Snyder, director of the comic book adaptations 300 and the soon-to-start-filming Watchmen, has already demonstrated a fondness for hand-drawn source material. According to Variety, his next project will take its inspiration from a different kind of illustration -- specifically, Ray Bradbury's 1951 collection of short stories, The Illustrated Man.

Since being confirmed as the writer and director for 2009's live-action adaptation of the classic Will Eisner comic The Spirit, Frank Miller has resisted naming the actor who will be strapping on the domino mask, fedora, and gloves for the title role. Miller only has enough mojo to keep a secret for so long, however, and -- as Variety reports -- an announcement has finally been made.

Three new competitors were no match this weekend for the mighty action epic "300," which easily defended its box office crown to rule North American theaters for a second straight time. Sandra Bullock reached a new career high with the thriller "Premonition," which debuted in third place while the horror film "Dead Silence" and the Chris Rock comedy "I Think I Love My Wife" opened in the top five with mixed results. "300" grossed as much as all three new releases combined.

Rodrigo Santoro Becomes Xerxes of Legend in "300"
In a larger than life battle film like "300," the villain has to be extra-larger than life. Xerxes, the king of Persia, is portrayed as seven feet tall. Actor Rodrigo Santoro is only 6'2". Not too shabby, but the other 10 inches are special effects. To look the part though, Santoro had to let go of vanity.

King Leonidas led 300 Spartans against Persia's army of thousands. In the film adaptation of Frank Miller's historical graphic novel, Gerard Butler portrays the legendary leader. When the film shows Leonidas taking out some 20 Persians in one stretch, Butler had to deliver.

Ah, the battle of Thermopylae: 300 Spartans, squaring off against an enormous herd of bloodthirsty Persians, and redefining courage and sacrifice in the process. You probably fell asleep when your high school history teacher tried to tell you about it, but luckily, Frank Miller used it as the inspiration for a graphic novel; since filmmakers seem to really enjoy adapting Miller's books, the battle of Thermopylae will be hitting screens March 9 in the form of Warner Bros. "300" Promo Clip is Pretty Drop-Dead Awesome
It's never wise to get too hyped for a movie based on only one promo clip, but ... wow. The movie is Zack Snyder's "300," which is based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller. And maybe I'm nuts, but this thing looks like "Sin City" meets "Gladiator" -- only cooler.

Comic Con 2006: Teaser for Frank Miller's "300" Looks Amazing
Even if you are not familiar with Frank Miller's graphic novel "300," but is a fan of the movie "Sin City," you ought to be excited about the forthcoming adaptation of that novel. I know I was after watching the awesome teaser clip. If the finished movie is anything like what's promised in this teaser, it's going to be an amazing piece of work.

Comic-Con 2006: Frank Miller on "Will Eisner's The Spirit"
Will Eisner is a legend in the comic book world and his seminal work, "The Spirit," is getting the movie treatment by a man no less of a comic book legend himself: Frank Miller who will both write and direct. The character The Spirit is a masked crime fighter who is unlike Batman. He has no special powers, often using wit instead force to subdue his opponents.
