Matt (Josh Hartnett) is having a hard time moving on six months after his relationship with bombshell Nicole (Vinessa Shaw) ended. He finds himself involved in empty physical relationships that are unfulfilling and ultimately send him fleeing. His solution is to give up sex and anything sexual for the 40 days of Lent. Initially, Matt is empowered by his decision--until he meets stunning Erica (Shannyn Sossamon), the girl of his dreams, at the local laundromat. Erica doesn't know about Matt's vow of abstinence, which impacts their budding relationship. To complicate matters more, Matt's co-workers are determined to literally put their two cents in as well by establishing a betting pool about how long Matt can keep his vow. Hartnett is endearing as the clumsy Matt, who desperately wants to do the right thing. Griffin Dunne stars as Matt's sex-starved boss. Also starring Paulo Costanzo and Maggie Gyllenhaal, the film was produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, the team that made NOTTING HILL and BRIDGET JONES' DIARY, and directed by Michael Lehmann (HEATHERS). The city of San Francisco provides a beautiful backdrop to this modern look at love that includes a touch of crude teen-movie humor. [More]

  • 40 Days And 40 Nights
  • An outrageously sexy comedy starring Josh Hartnett (PEARL HARBOR, BLACK HAWK DOWN) and Shannyn Sossamon (A KNIGHT'S TALE), 40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS is another hilarious hit from the producers of NOTTING HILL and BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY. On the heels of a disastrous breakup and a string of unfulfilling romantic conquests, Matt Sullivan (Hartnett) yearns to become a better, more complete person. In the midst of his despair, he chooses to test himself by making a vow of no sex whatsoever for 40 days and 40 nights! With everyone betting he won't finish ... and a seductive new girl in his life (Sossamon) ... it's all Matt can do to just hold on! Fun, fresh, and wildly entertaining -- you'll agree with critics everywhere who found this sexy comedy adventure totally irresistible!

A smart sex comedy that revels more in the gray matter than the groin.

A slight but enjoyable-in-the-moment cataloging of one guy's battle with libido… [that] never manages -- or, sadly, seems to aspire -- to anything more than breezy diversion.

Along with its share of cheap comedy, it delivers a decent love story, perceptive comment on sexuality and relationships, and a breakout performance by Josh Hartnett.

The material may be lightweight, but it's been shaped into a film that deserves to become a classic in an admittedly lightweight genre.

Works as guilty pleasure; there are plenty of great laughs which sustain the film despite its faults.

Hartnett's charm and his simmering chemistry with Sossamon ... trumps most of the film's silly and occasionally stupid excesses.

The misunderstandings are all thankfully low on the "Three's Company" scale while Hartnett and Sossamon's chemistry is undeniably potent.

A sex comedy starring Josh Hartnett is almost guaranteed a mainstream following. But that hasn’t kept Lehmann from giving 40 Days the look and feel of a spirited, independent comedy.

This is a movie full of sex jokes, but they don't involve mechanics and fluids so much as the nature of sex and the way it governs young life.
