It's a real testament to just how fluid and undefined our lives really are.

What began as a project to expose harsh class distinctions in British society has evolved into an intimate character study of everyday individuals who are navigating their way through life's many twists and turns. This installment features returnees Tony, Bruce, Sue, Jackie, Suzy, Paul, Simon, Nick, Andrew, John, Lynn, and Neil. What is most inspiring about 49 UP is the realization that all the subjects appear to have found an inspiring level of contentment in their personal lives. While no one has won the lottery or struck impossible gold, they have all managed to age gracefully and prove that a normal life is a noble life. Apted incorporates footage from the previous films in order to provide background and ensure that the film stands on its own. Concentrating on personal matters--as opposed to politics--49 UP is another remarkably poignant, and deeply universal, work of nonfiction from the multidimensional British director. This film was included in the 44th New York Film Festival organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center. [More]

Reviews for 49 Up
As a viewer, I feel privileged to be able to peer into their private lives perchance to learn something useful about my private life.
For under-30 viewers who still think they're immortal, the latest installment could very well be the grimmest and most haunting of horror films.
This long documentary is captivating. Not because you're peeking at lives of real people, but because it captures the way time heals all wounds and how people find a way out of deep holes if they are determined to do so.
What the series means in the long run is anybody's guess; I just know I sleep better at night knowing it's out there.
Whether we actually 'know' these individuals or not is beside the point; we feel we do, and this enriches the experience of watching the most ambitious documentary project ever committed to celluloid.
A fascinating new installment of a documentary series that focuses this time on English middle-agers and their achievements and disappointments in life.
49 Up marks the latest chapter in one of the most ambitious documentary projects in movie history. Make that the history of any medium, for how often do we get to witness a time-lapse study of human life?
Though less extreme, the Up series suggests a real-life Truman Show, with subjects sometimes reluctantly allowing their lives to be recorded on film.
More than a deeply satisfying movie; it's a reminder of the wonder contained in ordinary lives.
49 Up follows diverse Brits first selected at age 7 as they now approach a surprisingly becalmed middle age.
There are some clear themes to these zig-zagging life journeys, but they tend to be truisms (marriage is hard work but worth it) rather than chest-clutching surprises.
Over the years I've laughed with these people, cried with them, and they seem like real folks I know (if only from a distance).
I won't bother you with all the particulars because that would steal the film's thunder. Know, though, that Apted includes enough footage from previous films to remind us of details we may have forgotten.
Michael Apted's Up series remains one of the great imaginative leaps in film.
On the cusp of their half-century mark, Apted’s British subjects have accommodated themselves to what they were, what they are, and what they will be.
Now, they are middle-aged, and (unfair to spoil small surprises here) embedded in life with some learned wisdom.
Apted deserves much credit for the patience he's demonstrated in documenting more than a dozen seemingly normal lives through the end of the 20th century and into the 21st.
Doesn't tell us about these people's lives so much as it splashes a cold hourglass of water in the face, reminding us that time can slowly turn us into someone unrecognizable, especially to ourselves.
