I cannot believe this is a "Top Critic." This may be a comedy, and there may be romantic sections, but I can't see how anyone, least of all a movie critic, could be so dull as to see NOTHING below the surface. I think it's hard to miss the fact that this film is NOT a romantic comedy- in fact, I think it's safe to say it is the complete antithesis of one. The entirety of the film is based on the idea that romantic comedies lie, that people do not have "one true love," that nobody is anyone's perfect soulmate, and even that the idea of love is a deception in and of itself. All plot about the romance of the protagonist is clearly exposition- the climax, the real meat of the film revolves around the protagonist's recovery from the romance, the reassessment of his philosophies on life, and the realization of the phoniness of conventional wisdom. It is chock-full of both beautiful insights into human nature as well as brilliant societal observations, political messages so forceful and powerful, I still marvel at how they could not penetrate your thick skull. This film is genius in its realism- I would say more, but I feel it would be wasted.
