A kind of Woody Allen comedy but without the jokes. Lots of cultural signifiers to make ivy league couples on a date feel at home, but totally lacking in substance.
I'm sorry... but without substance?? Ths film has come as close to broken-heartedness as hardly any other picture before it. It manages to make us fall in summer and be completely devasted when she leaves us... and only repeated viewings make us accept that she was not the right one for us.
You know, I can handle criticism... but your argument is just plain stupid an matter-of-factly untrue.
I actually agree whole-heartedly with this review. I found nothing to 'fall in love' with about Summer's character (I really like Zooey Deschanel and expected more). I absolutely do NOT get why the lead actor was so distraught over losing this wood-be relationship. Definitely don't think this film was worth seeing.
this is what happens when a good movie with chick-flick names is made, you shallow people aren't used to a movie with TRUE substance (something you wouldn't understand seeing as though you've never seen a good movie)and you immediately dismiss it because you can't completely grasp it.
I'd like to know what is this person's definition of a movie with substance. Clearly, the review amounts to no more than a well-powdered rant about a movie that he didn't like. There is much more that you need to experience in order to understand such movies. I read your other reviews and it seems that you don't hit the nail most times.
"(500) Days of Summer" is a deconstruction of typical rom-com fare, stripping away the cliches of the sub-genre and being more genuine (if also more pessimistic) as a result.
I totally disagree with this review. How is this movie "totally lacking in substance?" This movie reflects the reality of how cruel a relationship can be on a man who thinks he has found the love of his life, only to find out she isn't. This isn't like your typical romantic comedy. It is much, much more than that. Not only is it well done, but this is a love movie that A LOT of guys can genuinely relate too, unlike most romantic comedies that always have the happy ending. This movie is very realistic in the aspect of love and how a man's life eventually revolves around one girl.
It's lacking substance? You have to be kidding. Maybe you've just never felt this way? I don't know. It touched my soul in a way no other movie did before. Because it was pictured in a way that's real, at last. - Actually. I kind of pity you for not getting it ;)

Although I wouldn't have given it rotten (just above rotten, probably) I agree completely with this review.
Very true.
