Samuel Bronston produced this extravagant blockbuster, shot in Super Technirama 70. Nominally directed by Nicholas Ray (who makes a brief appearance as the U.S. ambassador), Ray was taken off the film and replaced by the more pliable directorial touches of Andrew Marton. Charlton Heston stars as Maj. Matt Lewis, the leader of an army of multinational soldiers who head to Peking during the infamous Boxer Rebellion of 1900. As the film unfolds, the foreign embassies in Peking are being held in a

Jack Hildyard's photography is excellent, particularly in getting on the big screen the savage attack scenes which take up the major part of the picture.

Nicholas Ray's last commercial film and second blockbuster for Samuel Bronston (after King of Kings) effectively ended his career as a Hollywood director, and the unwieldiness of this spectacular... helps in part to explain why.

An epic tale about the "Boxer Rebellion" and the fall of the Chinese Dynasty. I enjoyed the history and the diplomacy. Although it was long winded, it still had a compelling story to tell. The whole diplomatic aspect to foreign affairs always interests me, and to have a historical truth to it made it even better.

Heston was strong as the Major with the love affair with Gardner. Her role was interesting with their non commitments. Then to have him later be able to commit to his colleagues daughter after her fathers death made for a convenient redemption. The cameo by Lukas, the doctor from 20000 Leagues, was a good addition, but he may have been more effective as a diplomat and doctor. Niven was stellar as the noble Englishman who chooses soft diplomacy over hard. He should me how I could never be a good diplomat since I am always rushed to anger over others' actions of betrayal, while he was composed and tactful.
