Masters of Horror - John McNaughton: Haeckel's Tale (2006)
My Rating
Movie Info
In this chapter of the MASTERS OF HORROR series, director John McNaughton presents HAECKEL'S TALE, the story of a pompous young med student who thinks that all mysteries can be solved through science. This thinking changes, however, when a trip back home (involving corpses and orgies of the undead) stirs up all kinds of erotic and gruesome desires that cannot be explained by textbooks.

A man approaches a female gypsy of sorts and requests the gypsy to bring back his dead wife. The gypsy tells the man a cautionary tale of a man named Haeckel who took lodge with an old man and his beautiful young wife on a stormy evening. The couple initially seems normal; however, when Haeckel hears strange screams, he fears for the young wife?s life. Instead, he discovers the couple has a nasty secret. After the man hears the story of Haeckel, will he still want the gypsy to revive his wife?

?I will not raise the dead.?
John McNaughton, director of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer; Sex, Drugs, and Rock N? Roll; Mad Dog and Glory; Wild Things; and the upcoming Shoedog, delivers Haeckel?s Tale. The storyline is interesting and an entertaining take on the zombie genre. The action scenes are solid, the script is well written, and the makeup is believable. The acting is above average despite the film containing a mediocre cast.
?All that is left is flesh. A machine without power.?
The Masters of Horror series continues to be an entertaining show in the mold of Tales from the Crypt. The overall directing is solid while the storylines are inconsistent for the most part. This film had a solid storyline and worthwhile character development. This is probably one of the better pictures in the series to date. I recommend viewing these films as they re-air on the Sci-Fi and Chiller channels.
