Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (2008)

My Rating

Movie Info

In his internet-distributed miniseries DR. HORRIBLE'S SING-ALONG BLOG, Joss Whedon puts his chorus where his comic books are, uniting once and for all his loves of sci-fi and musical theater. Broadway vet Neil Patrick Harris stars as the title's cut rate supervillain, a wannabe who's always one step behind his preening nemesis, Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion). The hero thwarts Dr. Horrible's schemes and courts his dulcet-voiced, do-gooder crush, Penny (Felicia Day), a sad fate the evil doctor

It reminded me of nothing less than an Edgar G. Ulmer picture, making clever use of limited resources but with more than enough wit and imagination to overcome its obstacles.

Audience Reviews for Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

Dr. Horrible: Sarcasm, that's original!

I found 'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog' to be one of the greatest internet distributed miniseries of all time, possibly the greatest. This is all thanks to the brilliant work by Joss Whedon and Neil Patrick Harris, who make an excellent team. Harris stars as a villain who starts falling in with a fellow laundry girl (Felicia Day), but his situation becomes more complex as she starts dating his enemy, Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion). 'Dr. Horrible' is perfect, and has a high replay level. There isn't much to say about it, as it is flawless, but if you haven't seen it, it is a must. Definitely the best web-show and the best musical of all time. Highly recommended.

In "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog," Dr. Horrible(Neil Patrick Harris) is an evil scientist who is not so much interested in ruling the world, as he is in being admitted to the prestigious Evil League of Evil, ruled by the nefarious Dead Horse. To do that, he first intends to pull off a daring daytime heist. All of his planning almost comes to naught when at the crime scene he runs into the lovely Penny(Felicia Day) who he has been working up the nerve to talk to at the laundromat. Tongue-tied as ever, he still manages to sign her petition before orchestrating the theft. And everything would have worked out perfectly, if not for the intervention of his arch-nemesis, Captain Hammer(Nathan Fillion)...

Directed by Joss Whedon, the delightful "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" takes the whole superhero mythos and turns it on its head in mostly goofball style. And did I mention that this is also a musical? Anyway, of the mortal enemies, Dr. Horrible is actually the more likable, even somewhat sad, whereas Captain Hammer is something of a preening bully. But neither of them are the true hero of this story, and that role goes to Penny who does not jump tall buildings or beat bad guys senseless. She just wants to make the world a better place by working for the homeless.

What I can't understand is how "Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog" hasn't gotten the up-most amount of respect that it deserves. If being consistently funny and well acted makes a straight-to-DVD/webseries forgettable, then I beg to differ. "Dr. Horrible" is like mother of the modern webseries-turned-short-movie; a privileged little film which is sure to be a solid cult classic. As a lover of certain cult films, I've got to say that this is undoubtfully one of the good ones. It isn't the best cult film, but it's a clever little musical with more heart and humor than one would be lead to respect by its lack of promotion. If you haven't heard of it, then I don't blame you. What I'm telling you right now is that if you've got around 40 minutes to spare, then this little gem is a good way to spend those minutes. It's worth your time in more ways than one.

This is a pretty clever spin on the classic battle between good and evil. Dr. Horrible is the central character, a rising bad-ass who documents his quest(s) through a video blog. The "sing-along" part undoubtfully comes from the fact that the whole thing is in fact a musical. There's not much of a great story, but the film does a good job at satirizing superhero/villain-movie cliches and stereotypical characters. Dr. Horrible's hunky handyman arch-nemesis is the biggest and funniest stereotype in the whole film, although Dr. Horrible alone is hilarious to watch. The film revolves mostly around Horrible's love for Penny, a woman he knows solely from "laundry day". Come on, at least admit that's clever.

Neil Patrick Harris is funny and overall pretty good. He's never been a spectacular actor and nothing has changed, but he's awfully funny here. Felicia Day plays Penny, while Nathan Fillon plays Captain Hammer. The funniest thing from the efforts of the cast is the choice to add "The Big Bang Theory" star Simon Helberg into the mix. Helberg is always hilarious to watch even when he's not portraying the stereotypical Jew. I guess the good stuff fails to change.

The musical number aren't half bad. They're nothing amazing, but I was never annoyed by any of them in particular. Sure, Penny's were kind of irritating, although only for a little bit. Aside from the annoying qualities of those particular songs, "Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog" is funny stuff. And it's also laden with hilariously apparent cliches and the like. Good times, yes?
