She Monkeys is a modern western about control, sex and creatures, directed by Lisa Aschan. When Emma meets Cassandra, they initiate a relationship filled with physical and psychological challenges. Emma does whatever it takes to master the rules of the game. Lines are crossed and the stakes get higher and higher. Critic Reviews for She Monkeys (Apflickorna)
With her mysterious, gripping debut, Swedish director Lisa Aschan deliciously subverts the coming-of-age formula.
Lisa Aschan's remarkable debut shows girls aping adult sexuality and power-plays. Female adolescence becomes a gasping for air and grasping for achievement, getting ahead of a rival or friend (the distinction blurs) however one can.
A courageous, periodically unsettling coming-of-age tale, She Monkeys is the arresting first feature from director Lisa Aschan.
An intriguing and unsettling exploration of female friendship, rivalry and burgeoning sexuality.
Examines with subtlety and wit the dangerously mischievous, highly competitive friendship between two good-looking teenage girls at an equestrian school in Gothenburg.
This quietly tense drama piercingly probes the travails of young girls on the cusp of womanhood, with all of the hormone-fuelled jealousy, duplicity and confusion that this entails.
[A] bitter, stalkerish view of the inner lives of girls that pushes boundaries to get nowhere.
Built on the shifting sands of childhood and adolescence, She Monkeys has an undercurrent of unease in which the characters are struggling to become 'adult', whatever that may mean.
It suffers a little from its resolute avoidance of titillation - a little more passion would not have gone amiss - but it's a worthwhile effort nonetheless.
Aschan gives her film a glacial surface while suggesting a maelstrom of suppressed rage and sexual urges just beneath.
Capturing the awkwardness and out-and-out terror of becoming a woman, She Monkeys is a gripping, genre-blending triumph elevated by commanding performances from its young cast.
[It] may sound like a pocket-fiddler's dream, but proves rather sweeter than its synopsis.
Captivating and powerfully emotional, this is a strikingly assured debut from director Lisa Aschan with a pair of terrific performances from newcomers Mathilda Paradeiser and Linda Molin and a scene-stealing turn from young Isabella Lindquist.
