A Norwegian fisherman survives a shipwreck at sea, and wrestles with the guilt of being the sole survivor while being celebrated as a national hero in this affecting drama based on actual events. Iceland, Westman Islands: 1984. Gulli (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) and his crew of seasoned seamen welcome a new cook into the fold before sailing out to sea on what appears to be a typical fishing excursion. Kormakur's film suggests that the enigma of Gulli can somehow be found in his peasant humility, his connections to his community.
Even knowing the outcome ... doesn't diminish the intensity and awe of watching it recreated in this deftly framed docudrama by prodigious Icelandic auteur Kormakur.
Director Baltasar Kormákur filmed on an actual trawler, which he sank, and its authentic-looking scenes will leave you shivering and reaching for a cardy.
It's an unexpected but provocative direction by Kormákur, who's placed himself in exactly the right elements to make this masterful film.
[Gulli's] story's pretty remarkable. But this film achieves a real kind of lonely magic when he's bobbing on the waves under the night sky, talking to a gull.
It's a gripping, downbeat film that poses and then (with help from British naval researchers) answers the question of his seemingly miraculous survival: a bit of willpower and a lot of blubber.
A film as uplifting, dramatic and mysterious as the startling events on which it is based.
A gritty, if ultimately underwhelming, drama from Iceland, based on real events that took place in 1984.
A quietly inspirational, beautifully made drama that also seems to reflect some of the Icelandic character and a whole nation's ability to survive testing times.
It's an intriguing drama ...
Shows pervading and wise humility in the face of nature.
A gripping journey through stormy waters and survivalist guilt, with some surprising black humour.
Back on home turf, Contraband director Kormákur has made a suitably dramatic recreation of a remarkable episode.
As a portrait of a lifestyle alien to many and the extraordinary resourcefulness of a very simple man, The Deep provides keen insight and empathy.
The Deep is a spare and reasonably compelling drama for the first hour, mainly thanks to Ólafsson's star-making turn.
