Director Alex de la Iglesia has become a cult figure in his native Spain for his stylish genre parodies. In 800 BULLETS, he waxes nostalgic about an era in Spanish filmmaking long gone, when Westerns and epics used the landscape of Spain for their vast background vistas. The film centers on Carlos, a rambunctious youth who ditches a school field trip to find the grandfather that his uptight mother has hidden from him. Carlos finds the old man a relic of his former self: whereas he was once a top Spaghetti Western stunt-man, he is now reduced to running a tawdry little western theme park for tourists. But Carlos' appearance fills the old man with some of his youthful vigor; while Carlos himself finds in his grandfather an appealing entry into the corrupt adult world. 800 BULLETS was a huge success in Spain, where it received four Goya Award nominations and took home one of them.
