Hanson’s enthusiastic participation in the project is bewildering given how pedestrian the story is: poor, white kid keeps getting beaten down before a final showdown...

Set in 1995 in the bleak, urban battle zone of Detroit, the film follows the struggles of a young man who is desperate to make a better life for himself. Jimmy Smith, Jr., better known as Rabbit, is destined for a life of squalor. Living in a cramped trailer with his deadbeat mom (Kim Basinger), Rabbit works in a factory to make ends meet. His only outlet is hip-hop. Possessing a talent for freestyle rapping, Rabbit still hasn't managed to unleash his true potential. But his best friend, Future (Mekhi Phifer), is determined to make that happen. Future forces Rabbit to enter a freestyle battle that he blew the week before, giving him another chance at redemption. Hanson's stellar portrait of lower-class urban disillusionment, shot with uncompromisingly gritty realism by Rodrigo Prieto, proves that the issue is no longer about race, it's about money. Eminem delivers a bold performance as the troubled youngster who is still trying to find his place in a harsh, cruel world. [More]

Reviews for 8 Mile
The whole film . . . coasts from colourless family melodramas to wacky-kid-hijinks. . . . 8 Mile is an uninteresting shell of a movie.
Com sua estupenda atuação neste filme, Eminem poderia facilmente buscar uma carreira no cinema.
Take away the napalm spread of profanity, impromptu scenes of steamy sex and the myriad joints that get smoked, and 8 Mile is basically a Disney sports movie with rap as the athletics of choice.
I've been curious about "the Eminem movie" for months. And while I have gotten the chance to see 8 Mile, little of my pondering has been quenched; Eminem remains an enigma.
Better than average rags-to-riches story, but expect to get pinched for a special edition DVD later.
Una buena película, un más que digno debut actoral para una estrella de rap, y una estupenda banda sonora. Nada mal, ¿eh?
Una producción es interesante en más de un sentido. Buen debut de Eminem.
Director Hanson skillfully creates the oppressive nature of urban poverty with the dirt, grit, and darkness that remains prevalent throughout...
There are brawls enough to provide the flavor of how life in the darker reaches of Motown can be.
Eminem summons things from deep inside himself to shed away ego and portray a calm, frustrated, worried kid who doesn't even talk too much.
For a pop star vehicle, it certainly ranks among the better ones and Eminem does have a strong screen presence. Unlike Purple Rain, this movie will probably hold up 18 years from now.
