Consensus: Its sadistic violence is unappealing and is lacking in suspense and mystery.

His innocent, naive world begins to unravel when he is hired by the widow of an industrialist to investigate what she has shockingly discovered in her late husband's safe. It appears to be a snuff film of a young girl being murdered. In order to discover the truth, he must enter the city's seedy underworld, guided by porn-store clerk Max California (Joaquim Phoenix, LADDER 49). [More]

Reviews for 8MM
This is not a movie for the squeamish, by any means. But for those who like their thrillers dark and their heroes a bit more complicated and flawed than the average shoot-without-a-blink type so prevalent in today's movies, 8MM fills the bill.
t's a comlpex achievement; exciting, sad and profound at the same time. It's also one of the year's first pleasant surprises.
I can't say I warmed to the results, but I was solidly held for the film's two hours.
Se salva por el buen oficio de su director y por la adecuada edición que presenta, pero pudo haber ido más allá y dejar de ser un thriller como tantos otros
8mm is neither the sick exploitation film nor the risible misfire the critics had prepared us for -- it is a movie of serious intent.
It is a real film. Not a slick exploitation exercise with all the trappings of depravity but none of the consequences. Not a film where moral issues are forgotten in the excitement of an action climax.
Rarely a bore, and often finds the slick energy of the most effective dark action films.
There's no faulting Cage's committed, intense performance, but his slide from professional, internalised concern into personal, self-righteous rage still leaves a nasty aftertaste.
My advice is get drunk, cook dinner, watch infomercials or do your taxes -- anything to keep those two hours for yourself.
