A dull slog through pornography, brutality and voyeurism, punctuated by beatings, shootings and knifings.

If Schumacher wants to make some porn, fine -- First Amendment and all that. He can do whatever the hell he likes. But he can't pretend to make a statement against porn with a piece of voyeuristic and pornographic crap like 8MM.
The mystery is more or less resolved in an overblown sequence that comes at the end of act two, and the revelations are contrived and incredibly underwhelming.
Eight Millimeter demonstrates the extent that non-challenging roles have stymied Mr. Cage's talent.
It is a real film. Not a slick exploitation exercise with all the trappings of depravity but none of the consequences. Not a film where moral issues are forgotten in the excitement of an action climax.
Rarely a bore, and often finds the slick energy of the most effective dark action films.
As the ending credits roll, your reaction is likely to be, 'Why did they mess up such a promising movie?'
Unsavory and unpleasant: violence against women is not entertainment.
Dark, dingy, overly violent, unpleasant and unfathomable. In all, not a pretty picture.
