In recent years, there has been a nationwide crackdown on illegal Burmese immigrants in Thailand. This has deeply affected the Burmese community in the country, many of whom had crossed the border to find a better life by seeking employment in the Thai labor market. Some have also developed close relationships with Thai people. This is the political background of Blissfully Yours, the second film by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Even though the town in this film seems peaceful on the surface, the boredom, hidden emotional conflicts, and communication differences, produce psychological tensions between the protagonists of the story. The main character is a Burmese refugee whose fate has linked him to the lives of two Thai women in this border town. The film details their mundane activities on a typical lazy afternoon. The characters do not have a meaningful goal in life. Under two flawed political systems, they choose to remain ignorantly blissful. -- © Kick The Machine [More]

Nothing much happens that usually goes for a film plot, though in real life this simplistic dreamy scenario is very believable.

A superb second feature from up-and-coming Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Its sense of duration physically affects the viewer, not only showing its protagonists in sleepy contemplation onscreen, but also literally demanding the same of the viewer

Weerasethakul films the lost couple with such aching tenderness that the effect is not titillating, but profoundly moving.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul's delicate, ethereal dream of a film marks the emergence of one of the more original and promising new voices to hit the international cinema scene in recent years.

Poetic and rhythmically confident, Blissfully Yours is a subtle seduction.

Unlikely to make Weerasethakul a household name -- but it confirms his status as a giant of fourth-world cinema.

After a while, the extremely limited camera movement and languid pacing take an exacting toll, resulting in a viewing experience that is considerably less than idyllic.

The viewer's reaction to the film seems extraordinarily subjective. I wouldn't be surprised if my third viewing of it found me declaring it either a dismal failure or a truly great work. For now, I'll settle on ambivalence.
