Consensus: An unimaginative heist movie aimed strictly at the preteen set.

Heist adventures and bank robberies are not just for adults, at least not according to Maddy (Kristen Stewart), the plucky 12-year-old star of CATCH THAT KID. Directed by Bart Freundlich, this remake of the Danish film KLATRETØSEN, turns the heist genre on its head in an action-packed combination of SPY KIDS and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. Maddy is a pre-teen adventure lover, determined to follow in her mountain climbing father's (Sam Robards) footsteps. Tragedy strikes when a mountain climbing injury causes him to become paralyzed and the family needs $250,000 for an experimental operation that they cannot afford. Even Maddy's mother (Jennifer Beals), a bank security systems designer, is incapable of receiving a loan from a bank where she had previously worked. Determined to save her father's life by providing the money for the operation, Maddy convinces two of her friends to help her pull off a heist on the very same bank. Together with Gus (Max Thieriot), a computer whiz, and Austin (Corbin Bleu), a mechanical genius, Maddy is ready to take on the bank, its villainous owner (Michael Des Barres) and the seemingly impenetrable bank vault suspended thirty feet in the air. The trio of pre-teens combine their skills and hatch a daredevil heist in this exciting caper led by Maddy, a savvy heroine for a new generation of fearless young women. [More]

Neither the planning of the heist, nor its execution is done with the skill needed for it to be compelling.

Catch That Kid, though not produced by Disney, has all the feel of a Disney Channel TV special.

If screenwriters Michael Brandt and Derek Haas atempted to write a servicable script, it isn't obvious.

Your 8-year-old sister will love it... but then again, it was only a few years ago that she was eating poop - clearly her judgment can't be trusted.

The script by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas strains credulity -to say the least! -- but if nothing else, it manages to work in all the obligatory heist movie cliches.

It's neither as funny as it needs to be nor serious enough to elicit more than a few crinkled brows from kids and their parents alike.

Apart from a few serious leaps in logic, the story moves along swiftly and painlessly, and is not needlessly cute or stupid. But that's not much of a recommendation.

It's doubtful that anyone involved in Catch That Kid ever considered this anything more than a paycheck.

What...you thought the Spy Kids trilogy wouldn't spawn its own line of copycats? Puh-leeze.
