Reviews
At best it's a thinking person's XXX flick; at worst it's as repetitive as a porn video.
Oshima's extraordinary tale of sexual obsession remains shocking 30 years later.
In her essay, “A Theory on Female Sexuality” (1966), American psychiatrist Mary Jane Sherfey noted that “the strength of the [sex] drive determines the force required to suppress it.”
It is a task to measure the film’s aesthetics, as it is secondary to frequent sex – shown in such patient detail that its reality would never be questioned.
The majority of what we are made to watch is far from enlightening, entertaining, or erotic.
Oshima, poses with In The Realm Of The Senses the philosophically seductive question: Does a form of government dictate the way people have sex?
