The life of one couple in China is forever changed when their 15-year-old son, Zhang Shuai, is convicted of robbery. Desperate for her son to have a chance at a happy life, his mother sells one of her kidneys in order to offer a bribe to the judge's lawyer for a lighter sentence. The lawyer keeps the money, however, and Zhang Shuai spends three years in prison. Now a free man, Zhang Shuai is livid at the world for the three years of his life lost to a prison sentence and for his mother, who died after the loss of her kidney.
