One of those movies that, by slow accretion of detail and bold dramatic vision, disclose the structure and feeling of an entire world.
Magnificent achievement by the late Edward Yang pushes him even higher in the pantheon of great directors.
Yang's film doesn't waste a single second of its four hours, and taken as a whole, reveals a beautiful, intricate, masterful tapestry that is as accomplished in its grand, quiet way as is The Godfather trilogy.
A Brighter Summer Day is itself in color, but it may as well be monochrome.

a fantastic film restored this year by scorsese's world cinema foundation, here's hoping this gets a dvd release sooner rather than later. some issue with the taiwanese government has been holding it up for at least 3 years. there is a crap version on google video with mostly unreadable subtitles :( the film

Tough to find, would like to see a version that isn't from google video, with cleaned up subtitles (again, please, no white subtitles on white backgrounds) because I only speak English and even that's sketchy.
